Medical Phrase Index? - sm

Posted: Jan 26, 2010

Hi.  I was lurking around here and saw where someone mentioned mentioned  the Medical Phrase Index.  I looked it up online and it's kind of pricey.  Question:  Is it worth it?  Would you recommend it?  I do psych transcription, which is where the majority of my experience lies.  However, with psych hospitals, etc., I also have to do some general med notes and Internal Medicine notes, etc., and also want to broaden my experience . . . so would this be a good investment?

We Used It For Years In Our Program - Linda Andrews

It was my favorite book for years, particularly for new MTs or MT students. It also was greatly helpful if a medical transcriptionist was given a new specialty or sub-specialty to transcribe. Many experienced MTs would tell you that they don't find it helpful. I always liked it because I could verify a phrase that I knew I heard but just didn't sound right.

I can still remember the day I found the first edition as I was browsing the shelves in the Medical Book Store. It's a great book!

However, it has over time gone up so much in price that it has priced itself out of the market for my purposes, especially since there are now great electronic resources. We now have Google, which is a great resource if you are cautious. You can find as many wrong entries for a medical word or phrase as right ones, so you do have to be careful not to just accept something just because you find it there.

I liked almost everything about the Medical Phrase Index. There were some words and phrases that didn't use correct upper- and lower-case letters, so that could be confusing at times. Other than that, the price was the reason I no longer use it.

I Have A Sore Finger! The Skin On My Index Finger Was Dry And Split And Now It Hurts When I Type!
Oct 13, 2009

Any suggestions?  It's really annoying makes typing difficult and I definitely cannot type with a band-aid on my finger.  I'm one of those finicky MTs who takes forever to find a comfortable height of my chair, distance from the keyboard, height of my monitor, etc.  And absolutely nothing on my wrists and hands!  No rings, watches, bracelets, band-aids! I was considering putting super glue in the split, but then chickened out. ...

"Patient Safety Index"
Apr 11, 2015

Hey, has anyone noticed a category called "Patient Safety Index" on your "performance scorecard?" Once a week I get a performance scorecard from my TSM. This patient safety index is based on the amount of errors you are marked down for. So if you have 4 post-audits, and one is marked down for something, your "patient safety index" will be 75% (with the minimum standard being 90%). It apparently goes by percentage of reports. So that means that under the Quality 2.0 plan (which she keeps sa ...
