leaving for new job - how much notice? - outahere!

Posted: Jun 21, 2012

Well, I am officially hired for a great new position - elsewhere of course - a partly in-house/and partly work from home place that seems to actually still be paying a decent wage to their transcriptionists.  Anyway, it all came about kind of suddenly and they need someone immediately, but not sure about how much notice to give to the service.  Any thoughts?

I think - people will tell you

...that a 2-week notice is preferable, ethical, and professional. Your current employer may warn you that you won't be eligible for rehire in the future if you leave without notice; you'll essentially be burning that bridge.

I've left 2 MTSOs without any notice (other than calling them and telling them I was leaving). At my age, they can't affect my future employability, so I didn't care about their threats. You might want to consider whether your future can/will be impacted.

Also, word to the wise: While this job prospect looks wonderful to you now, you may find yourself regretting the move. If you've burned your bridges, or hoping to get a respectable reference, you may have done some real damage to your reputation. Also, any new employer should respect your desire to give notice; after all, what you do now is an indicator of what you'll do to them one day.

How much notice??? - Pixie

Question: How much notice?

Answer: That would be....none.

How much advance notice do we get when there is no work available? That would be...none.

Grab your hat and run!!! Congratulations on the new position and best of luck!

I gave 1 for the above reason. They never gave me notice on losing accounts, no work, etc and I am 1000% positive I will never return here...Moved on and happy. Now if they would reimburse my computer $ :)

2 weeks (nt) - anon

Why would this job be different from any other? Two weeks notice is the standard or you may not receive your PTO if you have a balance in your account and they may not give you a good recommendation. You may think now that you won't want to be rehired but anything can happen, so leave on good terms. Your new job working on site and at home, I hope you have a set schedule or it could be difficult hopping back and forth.

two weeks - outahere!

Well, until a couple of months ago, I have only worked in a hospital setting, for 20+ years as it happens, so was not up to date on how services handled someone leaving. When I was at the hospital, because of the sensitive nature of the work, it was hospital policy that anyone leaving, for what ever reason, was ESCORTED out of the hospital and access to data bases was terminated on the spot! They did not want anyone staying on who might commit an otherwise firing-type offense, such as accessing personal/family/neighbor's medical records, etc.

Sorry if it just seemed rude to some of you, I have never worked for a service and didn't know what they expected as far as giving notice.

Transcend literally gave me 3 days notice to decide when the hospital outsourced us to them to think about things. We were told on a Friday, completely shocked, and was to have completed paperwork by Tuesday morning! Transcend told us if we did not have that completed, they would take it as a decline of their offer.

Unless Transcend suddenly develops a SIGNIFICANT change in attitude toward long timers who can do every work type and doctor and pay and award PTO by years of experience and expertise, I have no intention of ever working there again! I was offered the same as others with 1 year of experience! I was told there will be no probation period where you can acquire a better rate and there will never be any further accrual of PTO, 10 days a year total, including all of your holidays. It was all proposed with a very haughty, take-it-or-leave-it attitude, and they actually said "Be thankful you weren't thrown out on the street and we were willing to accept you!"

So, I am sorry, but I am not feeling any obligation beyond a week's notice at most. They can go find a new person with 0 experience since they seem to value that person as much as an experienced MLS!

Congrats on your new position. I agree that 2 weeks is enough notice, but with Nasty Nuance I would give them what they give us. NOTHING AT ALL. I have never left a job without 2 weeks notice but this is a bridge I would be willing to burn.

I would give - nn

I would ask the manager at my new job when they wanted me to start. If they say in a week, that would be the amount of notice I would give. Most employers will follow the at-will guidelines that apply to all states except Montana, meaning they can fire you at any time for any reason and you can also leave at any time for any reason, with this not being held against you. There are some MTSOs that will lock you out immediately once you give notice for security reasons.

I offered 2 weeks, but left after 1 due to low work - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I did the official 2 week notice, but work volumes were so low that I asked my TL if she would be okay with me leaving after a week, but said I would stay the full 2 weeks if she needed. That way I hopefully left on good terms, and she gladly took me up on my offer to leave early because everyone was running out of work.

QC Leaving?? Leaving More Work For MTs?
Jun 14, 2015

Sorry QC was put on the grid and suffering losses (like we have), but from my point of view the more of them leave, the more work left for us.  Isn't that horrible we are reduced to feeling that way about our co-workers??? Some QC say they are not allowed to do MT unless the account is behind, some say they are allowed when they run out of work.   From the length of time we have been suffering from OOW I have to believe they can and do jump in on our work when out of QC ...

Leaving MQ?
Jun 14, 2010

I've been sending out resumes almost daily for close to 8 months now.  I've also been on at least 20 interviews but once they actually realize I've been working at home for almost 20 years, I don't get any job offers because they "want office experience."   I've been so depressed with so many medical offices turning up their noses at me because I've been working from home.  I'm quite sure I probably know termin ...

Leaving The Q.
Jul 20, 2011

Just wanted to add my voice to the growing chorus of long-timers leaving the Q finally. The account I worked on for 15 years just up and vanished Monday - without a word to any of us. I applied for, and got, a job offer within minutes of sending my resume. I know MQ has beaten us all down over the years, but there are actually other companies and people who appreciate our abilities and stamina to say with such a company for so many years in spite of it all :) ...

Not Sad To Be Leaving The Q,
Sep 10, 2011

I've been cleaning out my office to start a new job soon, and I came across some things from the good old days, i.e., before the Q.  I found email certificates my first CCM from 10 years ago sent when I kicked it line count and quality-wise.  She didn't have to do that, but back then, we got respect as much as we gave it (I was HS back then).  I also found some old pay stubs from when I was a tier 1 and just getting into the routine.  I now make 1/6 of what I did wh ...

What I've Seen Since Leaving MT
May 01, 2012

I recently left the MT field but am in a position where I have to review medical records daily. I've come across mistakes that make me question where they came from... was it a VR report that an editor didn't catch... was it a transcription error... or was it a doctor error. Some of the things I've come across were a statement along the lines of "would've healing well"... I figure this was supposed to be something like "wound is" healing well. I came across a discrepancy ...

To Those Leaving MT
Sep 13, 2012

Curious, as to those getting out of MT, where are you going? I am soooo dissatisfied with this profession today. My wages are half what they were hourly only 4 years ago (VR for me is not profitable). The account specs get more and more complicated and you have to work on at least 5 or 6 accounts to keep work. Add in the hard to understand accents (I mean can't even understand the dictator's name half the time) and the left off demographics, and it is a recipe for low, low wages. I liv ...

Since ASR and off-shoring came along I have been wanting to leave the industry and after 5 years of procrastinating I finally took the plunge.  I have been applying and interviewing and after turning down two offers from different companies I finally accepted a position a couple days ago as a nurse aide with 1/2 hr lunch which food is provided, two 10 minute breaks, every other weekend off, every other holiday off (time and a half pay when I do work holidays), $.30/hr extra weekend pay, 4% ...

So Now Leaving A Mg Off A Med
Dec 27, 2014

That just seems weird. I get if it's supposed to be mcg and you put mg, something doctors often do in their dictation, but leaving off the mg, 3.0? Guess I Am Not Leaving

Leaving MT For Walmart?
Dec 13, 2010

I have way too much time on my hands today so I thought I would ask this question.  Has anyone left the MT profession and went to work at Walmart, a pharmacy, drug store, or any other store?  Will they hire us since we have been an MT for 10+ years?  What about factory jobs, you know the light duty assembly kind?  Have any of you had any luck getting hired in anything other than as an MT without going back to school? ...
