What have you turned to once leaving MT - TexasGal

Posted: Jun 25, 2014

Just wondering what those of you who have chosen to leave the MT field entirely and go into some other business have found to do when you've been doing MT for 30 years?  I'm not asking you to tell me which company/field specifically (not looking to swipe your job, etc.) but just wanted to see what else is out there that one of us has found easy to transition to, etc.  My goal was to quit MT and start making custom-made cat furniture/trees but that has gotten put on the back burner.  I was a QC who chose to leave Nuance before my sanity left ME but now I'm working 1-1/2 jobs doing MT (you gals that do this now really rock cause I haven't had to type for production in quite a while and haven't had to do VR editing at all until now).  Definitely not making the $$ that I used to, which is quite stressful, and don't have nearly as much time off (again, stressful) but this is about all I know what to do.  Thanks for any and all responses!

When I was outsourced around 7 years ago (worked for a hospital), unfortunately the people I worked with, the ones I kept in touch with, did not seem to find good jobs for the most part, though a few found jobs as transcriptionists in clinics. It is hard out there to get any kind of job. I would say it depends if you live near a large metro area with hospitals and clinics. I worked for a couple of clinics, outsourced once more from one. The other was a lab and it was okay but as I am getting ready to retire, I wanted part-time so have been with Nuance for about a year. Can't wait to leave. It is hard changing careers if you are older. If you can, I would just keep an eye out on hospital web sites and on-line to see if there is anything. Nothing could pay less than Nuance, so maybe receptionist, unit clerk. Could you move? Some areas seem to have hospitals that are hiring. It is a lot better being an MT in a hospital than for these companies. Good luck!

I have only been an MT for seven years, but sometimes that feels like an eternity. I decided it was time to go back to school, so I will have my bachelor's in management this coming August. I am hoping I can find a job with much, much better pay and benefits. Struggling to make ends meet is definitely not the way I want to live my life. It is not worth it.

Freelance transcription. Not for an eLance-type - website, just word-of-mouth. smsg

I mentioned to friends & acquaintances that I was out of work, and was a transcriptionist. One thing led to another, and now I have a couple people who prefer to pay me cash to have their interviews and meetings typed by a single local person they could deal with personally, than by a pool or an invisible online person. I still need to find additional work to supplement that income, but it's enjoyable work that puts my transcription and transcription skills to good use.

Thank you!

PS: My editing skills aren't so good, however! - I meant to say "research" and trans. skills.

LOL! ADD personality makes for lousy editing skill! ;)

I would really like to give the free- lance transcription a shot. I know you went by word of mouth, but can you give me an idea as to what type of organizations/individuals you type for?

Try this website. I was surprised at what jobs were available in my area.

Also, I would suggest to anyone wanting to get out of this business to try for a civil service job, noncivil service job with your state or the federal government. That is the only way you are going to get good pay and benefits.

The top job that came up was as a chicken deboner for Tyson's.

Bank teller...got hired with no experience - clb

[ In Reply To ..]
I took a shot in the dark when applying at my local bank for a teller position. My work experience consisted of MT, before that doctor's offices, before that retail cashier. I was interviewed, followed up, and offered the job the following week. I jumped on it! Never been happier. I honestly never thought I would get that type of position and was actually the last job I applied to before giving up and just staying with MT. I applied everywhere! Walmart, hospitals, clincs, factories, retail, cable companies, food service, maid, you name it!

Try for a job even if you think you won't have a chance, that's what I did with the bank and it turned out to be my big break from MT! Good luck.

Stuck due to geography, age, and disability. - Truly stuck, believe me, I have tried.

Sample cover letter intro...

"Hello, my name is _____. I have _____ and will likely be dead in 4 or 5 years. Don't you agree that I am the best person for this minimum wage job you have here?"

Sorry to be so sarcastic, but this job, as you know, sucks--and so do the options for many of us that were bought without our permission or knowledge by this company then treated like holy crap since "signing on."

Civil Service job at local university - great pay and benefits

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm making $16.00 an hour as an enrollment/registration specialist (fancy name for secretary) with fantastic insurance, paid leave, and retirement plan. I work 37.5 hours a week. Your best bet is getting a Civil Service position, either at a state university or with the state itself. You have to take tests to get in, but once you're in, you're in. And you can move up the ladder by testing for higher-paying positions.

I went back to work at the office position I had before doing transcription. Check your local job service site and watch it daily. And I'd love to be in the cat tree business! I have 8 cats and love them all very much. Worst thing about coming back to "work." :) Good luck!

QC Leaving?? Leaving More Work For MTs?
Jun 14, 2015

Sorry QC was put on the grid and suffering losses (like we have), but from my point of view the more of them leave, the more work left for us.  Isn't that horrible we are reduced to feeling that way about our co-workers??? Some QC say they are not allowed to do MT unless the account is behind, some say they are allowed when they run out of work.   From the length of time we have been suffering from OOW I have to believe they can and do jump in on our work when out of QC ...

Turned Down Again
Feb 15, 2011

Applied for in-house office clerk job.  Recruiter said I looked great and she would send the application to the department head.  Never heard.  Checked the online status.  Message the next day after meeting with recruiter said "thanks but no thanks, you are not being considered for this position." So she lied I presume?  I guess the next thing to try is cashier for the Dollar store.  I feel so low.  What do people think we are doing all these years in ...

Turned In My Notice
Aug 18, 2010

I finally turned in my notice. I actually starting leaving abt 4 mos ago.  Took a PT gig w/another company and just love it. I had gotten to the point that I hated to come to work. I found that I did not hate my job I hated the company that I worked for. My husband told me to stop complaining and find something else and I did.  I went fulltime w/this company and am already making $4/hour more than I was at MQ and get this doing ASR....I hated ASR w/MQ. This companies system is so ...

Turned In My Notice...
Aug 30, 2011

I've said this before w/in the last week, but again, I never bashed my former employers on here until the last few weeks.  I've been "owned" by MQ for awhile since they bought my previous (wonderful) employer maybe a year ago, and I've finally had it.  So excited to leave, but wishing those of you who are sticking it out the best.  If you're going to be nasty, don't even bother.  I've had enough life sucked out of me to argue w/ you.  Again, ...

Turned Down For MT Because I Live In CA
Apr 22, 2015

I have been turned down by 3 different MT companies stating it is because of California's laws creating problems. Anyone else having this problem? Is there a way around it? Jun 14, 2014

sent it to the owner of the company and cc'd her admin asst, who hired me.  The AA accidentally replied back to the owner on that same email chain and forgot to delete my name so it was sent to me too, stating she was "ticked off" that I quit, that they had done "so much for me" and basically that it was my fault because I didn't communicate to them that I didn't have enough work.  Mind you, we had discussed this via email 3 weeks prior, that I wasn't making enough ...

Leaving The Q.
Jul 20, 2011

Just wanted to add my voice to the growing chorus of long-timers leaving the Q finally. The account I worked on for 15 years just up and vanished Monday - without a word to any of us. I know MQ has beaten us all down over the years, but there are actually other companies and people who appreciate our abilities and stamina to say with such a company for so many years in spite of it all :) ...

Not Sad To Be Leaving The Q,
Sep 10, 2011

I've been cleaning out my office to start a new job soon, and I came across some things from the good old days, i.e., before the Q.  I found email certificates my first CCM from 10 years ago sent when I kicked it line count and quality-wise.  She didn't have to do that, but back then, we got respect as much as we gave it (I was HS back then).  I also found some old pay stubs from when I was a tier 1 and just getting into the routine.  I now make 1/6 of what I did wh ...

What I've Seen Since Leaving MT
May 01, 2012

I recently left the MT field but am in a position where I have to review medical records daily. I've come across mistakes that make me question where they came from... was it a VR report that an editor didn't catch... was it a transcription error... or was it a doctor error. Some of the things I've come across were a statement along the lines of "would've healing well"... I figure this was supposed to be something like "wound is" healing well. I came across a discrepancy ...

To Those Leaving MT
Sep 13, 2012

Curious, as to those getting out of MT, where are you going? I am soooo dissatisfied with this profession today. My wages are half what they were hourly only 4 years ago (VR for me is not profitable). The account specs get more and more complicated and you have to work on at least 5 or 6 accounts to keep work. Add in the hard to understand accents (I mean can't even understand the dictator's name half the time) and the left off demographics, and it is a recipe for low, low wages. I liv ...
