looking for a good online MT school - N.C.

Posted: Sep 03, 2011

I've been searching for an online MT school that has a good rep among Mt's and MT employers for been a good school with a good training.  So far I have on the list CareerStep, M-Tec, and Andrews.

Please, any opinions and advice about these schools (or any other I don't know about), negative and positive, would be soooo welcome since I'm having a hard time choosing a school.  I would not like to waste my money on a school with a poor training and not known or respected in the MT field.

Please, sharing your experience and knowledge would be so appreciated.

Thank you.

Call all 3 of them before you make your final decision - sm

The best thing to do is to call each of those schools and talk to them about medical transcription. You'll know a lot more after you do that.

As someone who hires I would recommend - MT

Andrews. I will always take an Andrews grad over any other student of any other program.

I second what you say! You can never go wrong with an Andrews grad. And it seems that Andrews never have problems finding a job--and rightly so. It is the best MT education on the planet.

Although I have posted the following before, several people have told me it is helpful, so I am posting it to you in the hope it will help. Please, please, please, do not consider any school that does not use SUM and have real, live instructors, as opposed to a school that gives you an answer key. This method of instruction is ineffectual in medical transcription. That said, here is the original post. (I might say that if I were still in a hiring position, I would ideally want someone from Andrews or M-TEC.) Here is the post, and good luck to you!

Several people have asked me if I think MT is still a viable career. Coincidentally, today as I was cleaning out some files, I found notes from a seminar I gave and thought I would summarize a few of the thoughts, hoping they might be of value to someone out there. (Moderator, if you don't feel this is appropriate, please just delete the post.) First, there are three "myths" to consider: 1. The myth that medical transcription is easy money. Many of the not so reliable schools push this idea and use it to exploit people. It makes me really disheartened that many people who do not have much money to begin with get taken in by this. Shame on the schools who do this! 2. The second myth is that it does not matter where you go to school; you can get a good medical transcription education anywhere. Again, another myth. The old saying that "you get what you pay for" really applies. When I am counseling people face to face, I always advise that the two things they MUST have from any program are the SUM program and real, live instructors. 3. The third myth is that you can always learn "the old fashioned way--on the job." That was true up until perhaps the end of the 70s; it is surely not true now. The marketplace and its structure (and pace) have changed too radically. When interviewing schools, ask questions: 1. Where are your graduates working? Can you give me the names of 2-3 grads who would be willing to share their experience with me? 2. How long has the school been in business? Is it a private entity? A sole proprietorship? Who are the principals? How are your instructors chosen? 3. Do your financial homework. Call the BBB and the Department of Business Regulation for the locality in which the school is registered. Have there been complaints? Have the complaints been satisfactorily resolved? 4. What form of financial aid do you offer? 5. How accessible are your instructors and by what means? E-mail only? Are telephone calls permitted/encouraged? 6. Does your school use authentic physician dictation such as in The SUM program? Or does it merely use scripts read by actors? 7. What type of follow-up does your school offer? Can I "retake" any portions of the course with which I have difficulty? How many tries do I have to pass the final? 8. What kind of placement program do you have? What percentage of your grads get placed? (There should not be a fee for placement.) 9. Utilize the wisdom of the "old salts"--ancient MTs like yours truly who have been in this business for decades. Most older MTs are happy to help newbies. Many people helped me when I was starting out, and in gratitude, I try to help people just starting. Those are just some thoughts that I culled from the seminar I did. I hope something in here helps someone. Have a great week!

good MTschool - Former MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I would never want to discourage anyone from bettering themselves. I actually taught transcription at one point. However, PLEASE, don't waste your time and hard-earned $$$ on honing MT skills. VR (voice recognition) has ruined it for everyone. The joke is that VR was supposed to be so much faster/easier/less skill needed, and that editing reports would be twice as fast as typing. Hence, the lower pay per line....all a big lie. Career Step is a reputable company, but they are tied in with MedQuist, and absolutely awful employer. Please read the MedQuist board. These are real MTs, and their stories are the same as mine. Trust me, you would do better getting a job at Wal-Mart money-wise. MedQuist is gobbling up other companies, and starving the MTs they acquire till they quit or wish they could. Please invest your hard-earned money in something you will actually be able to earn a living doing and will get raises instead of annual pay cuts!!! Again, I don't want to discourge you, but it's the truth.

Career Step trains overseas - Maggie May

[ In Reply To ..]
How can you think of giving them your money to train you, when they are training people overseas to take all the MT work? They make money selling their training program, and obviously they don't care if you can actually get a job afterwards or not.

Maggie May - Old Pro

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, not only that, but how can you train on program that does not provide access to real, live instructors? I could not, in all conscience, recommend any school that trained people who take American jobs. AMERICAN JOBS FOR AMERICAN WORKERS! We are on the brink of a depression that will make 1929 look like peaches and cream, and still people support organizations with foreign interests.

MTEC - D-MT

I just graduated from MTEC and loved it! I loved my instructor and feel very well prepared to enter to the working world. Please e-mail me if you'd like more info!

How Difficult Is An Online MT School?
Dec 23, 2009

I'm seriously considering enrolling at one of the "top two" MT online schools.  I'm good at English grammar, spelling, type over 100 wpm with 98% accuracy, a perfectionist, and am also very focused.  I do have a full-time job, but can easily devote evenings and time on the weekends to complete the course.  I'm up for a challenge, but after doing quite a bit of research, this sounds really difficult.  Feedback please! ...

Anyone Know A Good Shorthand Online Course?
Mar 19, 2010

I finally got my study material for my administrative assistant course, but according to what I've read so far I may need to learn shorthand.  Transcribing my own scrawl is going to be a big step up from transcribing some of the dictators I've listened to, and I gotta say one good thing for my MT career, I don't need to worry about passing the keyboarding section. Anyone know where I can find a good online course for learning shorthand, that isn't too expensive?  T ...
