DONT GIVE UP - Suzmt

Posted: Feb 01, 2010

This board is sometimes so disheartening.  All of you new MTs, we are graduating from reputable schools, we are getting jobs and it is no different from any other occupation.  Times change, rules change, technology changes, but if we are not set in our ways and our not willing to grow, things will disappear.  We always blame everyone else, but maybe its time to look at the opportunities that do exist and concentrate on where we do want to be in 5 years or 10 years.  People that are looking at retiring don't care what 5 years down the road has to hold.  BE POSITIVE!! Don't let the negative on this board destroy your search or your desire to be successful.  It takes a lot of work to land a career.  Lots of letters, resumes, thinking outside of the box and yes even working for less than minimum wage it that's what it takes.  It's up to you at what you make of this.  You can throw it away and drive to Walmart everyday for minimum wage plus wear and tear on your vehicle, child care and clothing expense and the monotony of working a set schedule when you could be with your family.  (What's it worth to you)!!

are working a set schedule and sometimes people get burnout. Checking the other board today a person just is complaining of having burnout, what to do about it. They probably would say monotony set in on them.

I'm 10 years from retirement and have been in this business for 30+ years, I'd say I was as committed to this profession as anyone out there, I worked for $1.95 per hour at my first transcription job if you can believe that, I've done it all these years because of my love of words and the ability to learn something new every day. Many of us have been where you are now; things are changing in our profession but probably not for the best. I am currently trying to find another MT job because my clinic is switching to EMR and I may have no other choice as they are cutting their staff. See how you feel about things in another 10 years or so.

Should be 10 years from retirement... - benchwarmer

I've got 25 years into IT and decided to retrain in MT (+Coding & Billing) due to continual lay-offs, being 58 (albeit a young 58) and needing to still work! BUT, I'm concerned that there may not be a future for me for the next 10 years here. Any words of encouragement? (I had Latin and lots of exposure to med terms in my family - terminology came easy and MT seems to be going pretty well).

I've also been thinking about coding and billing. My employer has 50% tuition reimbursement so I probably should take advantage of that in case I am not chosen to stay. I still need to work too and hope that I can eventually get a VR editing job somewhere. I think the jobs will be there, it just won't be straight transcription. Things are kind of crazy in the MT world right now, that's for sure. If you enjoy MT work I'd say go for it, maybe you could become an IC or divide your time between coding and transcription.

I have reached full retirement but again most of us who work have set hrs and this can be as boring as anything else. I had burnout but not in years now.

most MTs do, even ICs. Just because we work from home doesn't mean we only work when we feel like it.

Keep an open mind to other things too! - MT10

My mission is to discourage anyone from getting in the MT field, as it will soon be obsolete. We are being replaced with electronic medical records, speech recognition and the rest is going overseas. I'm holding my breath hoping I can keep the job long enough to pay for my college education. I would definitely advise on finding something else. MT is a dying industry.

Been around a long time...seen a lot...don't give up due to negative comments. Good things in life come and go. The field will get better again. We will not disappear. Go for it!

I'm also in my 50's and just completed my diploma in Hospital Records Transcription. Landed a job right out of the gate,,,albeit a low paying one. Now, each day, I feel a little bit more discouraged. It seems like no matter how well I do, or how hard I work, all I hear is complaining. I made one mistake out of 125 reports, and you would think the world caved in. Is it so unusual for a new person to make a mistake once in a while? I just don't know if I'm cut out for this or not.

MT is not like any other career. Prior to MT training I worked in 2 large industries and was never treated the way I have been treated as an MT newbie. Companies rarely ignored my resumes altogether. I was given a chance to interview and test for jobs as long as I met minimum requirements. Certifications and training were a plus, rewarded by interviewers and supervisors alike. In MT, I'm routinely ignored or told that my education means nothing. Competition for jobs was stiff, but it was never because companies outsourced or wanted to pay me less than minimum wage so they could make huge profits.

And that BS about MT being "worth it" because you get to work a varied schedule and spend time with your family -- are you kidding me? You sound like one of those irresponsible commercials that makes it seem like you can sit on your couch and just leisurely type away while taking care of kids. That's not the truth AT ALL!

Ignoring resumes - welcome to the recession - LK

[ In Reply To ..]
Believe me, I'm not saying you should feel OK about having your resumes ignored, but this is happening all over now, not just to MTs. Companies in every industry are so deluged with resumes right now due to the high unemployment rates that they don't even respond back. I know several people looking for jobs (looking for management level positions, one in insurance and one in HR), and they rarely hear back on resumes they submitted. It's tough going out there now for everybody.

I appreciate your optimism. Thank you. It's hard to stay positive with the "negatives" pressing in on you daily. Finding a job isn't just tough in this market, people going to a four-year college are coming out and not finding anything either.
The experience factor is stifling the incentive to persue this field. You know the drill "You can't get hired without experience and you can't get experience without getting hired."
Any suggestions?

First of all focus not only on your education, but your personal work experience. You have to sell yourself and you have to do it in a way that the person reading that resume is going to say "wow" I want that person. You have to create a cover letter that tells what you are willing to do to go the extra mile. Focus on what you can offer the company, not so much on what the company needs to offer you. Be flexible. I do not care what people say on this site, there are jobs out there and there are graduates getting jobs everyday. Do not give up and do not listen to the all the negative crap, it just depresses you. Focus on your strengths and look at your weaknesses and what you can do personally to overcome those. Turn the weaknesses into strengths. Ex: If you overcommit-set up a calendar, pencil in some free space and learn to say no. Do not compromise on that space. Set boundaries for yourself. You then have the opportunity to focus on the positive of overcoming your weakness. Send out resumes, it takes a lot of work to get a job! Cover letters, resumes, follow up letters, thank you letters and so much more. Once you find that perfect fit, then you to can post on her and encourage someone else not to give up their dream. GOOD LUCK

Very thoughtful and realistic - Great Advice!

I Dont Get It
Mar 03, 2012

All the anger and bitterness is not going to make your situation go away or change anything. If people are unhappy, then they need to get to the root of the problem and fix it. Ultimately we as individuals have the power to determine what we will and will not stand for. So many are unhappy with their jobs and from what I can tell every company out there is pretty much the same. It does not matter where you work, if you have a bad manager/team lead/QA, then see about moving to a different r ...

If you do nothing to change a bad situation, the bad situation will never change.  But I guess some, like my DS, thrive on the drama of poor me, I can do nothing to help myself, please feel sorry for me.  And others, like me, hate drama, hate being treated bad, and refuse to stand by and let it continue.  I will not let a MTSO rule my life to the point of draining my bank account, monopolizing my time and stomping on my self esteem. Why would I stay in a situation ...

I Will Tell You What I Dont Love About
Nov 02, 2012

I really seriously cannot stand when the work volumes are low, having to bounce around from account to account, in and out of our own BOB. It is hard enough trying to juggle the multiple number of accounts and all of their demands in the profiles, but having to go into another BOB is just plain ridiculous. I made next to no money today, spent more time reading the 4 page profiles after each report because only twice in 5 hours did I have the same hospital. Didn't Amy say she was going to ...

Has there ever been a union for transcriptionists?  I have never heard of one, but have often wondered if that would be beneficial.  I mean if the people want it..why not.  But I don't reallly know about how these unions and things work.  Maybe Ive watched too much TV, but it seems like back in the day when they had unions, nobody made a move without consulting the union.  The Teamsters...that is what I'm thinking of.  Again, It's just a memory to me ...
