Clinical Dictation - LadyMT

Posted: Oct 29, 2010

Opinions, please. Does anyone know if it's possible to get work at home employment doing clinical dictation only?  If so, do you think it's possible with only basic medical transcription training?

Yes. No. - MT

with only basic training you should not be qualified to do ANY MT, IMHO.

Don't let them fool you - US transcription is soon to be a thing of the past. - disenchanted

With only basic training - Former MTSO

people should not be transcribing. They need a complete course (with the SUM program). Don't try to jump in half-prepared--it won't work. Get a full education and then you can do anything and will have much more versatility.

but if you go out and get your own clinics, not working for an MTSO. If you get your own private practices, they don't give a hoot about the BOS or any other ridiculous mandated garbage that the MTSO's place on today's transcriptionist. Hospitals and clinics alike don't require all of the b.s. that these companies shove down your throats. It is solely the MTSO doing it. All you need is a basic MT course, typing skills, and a firm grasp of spelling & grammar, and of course a Stedman's spellchecker and a drug book. Don't go the MTSO route - you can't make any money that way and all you'll do is get discouraged and quit.

YOU CAN DO IT!!! Good luck!!

They DO give a hoot about - JMHO

whether someone has enough experience to be able to transcribe medical jargon without "handholding," which the OP will need a lot of without proper training. Private practices, hospitals, and clinics want someone who can work independently without having to train them in medical terminology, etc., and they want speed. There are plenty of qualified MTs out there applying for these jobs, MTs well trained and with experience. With minimal training, the OP will have a very difficult time getting or even keeping a job. I have seen plenty of these minimally-trained people come and go quickly in private clinics and hospitals I have worked for, as well as small MTSOs. JMHO

And this is the reason - imamt

that we have so many UNQUALIFIED MTs helping to push down pricing.

Not sure what offices YOU type for, but I've transcribed for small doc offices to large hospitals and while the hospitals were the ones wanting BOS-rules followed, the docs still want a perfect report.

You betcha this is the reason! - Meg

There are faaaar too many unqualified wannabes diluting the gene pool of the MT world. Not only does it hurt all MTs, THINK OF THE RAMIFICATIONS IT HAS FOR PATIENT CARE. Many people want to become MTs for all the wrong reasons.

I also agree - Anonymous

I work for a physician-owned multispecialty clinic. We are audited and expected to follow the BOS guidelines, it is not only the MTSOs who follow those guidelines. I've worked for smaller physician's offices and actually found them to be more particular about quality than the larger employers. It is important to be trained well and requires more than a "basic course," especially considering how competitive the job market has become.

I have to agree.. - sm

I have worked for hospitals, outpatient diagnostic clinics, and for the MTSO's, and over the past 17 years, I've found it has only been the MTSO's that ever pushed the BOS. The BOS is exactly that, a book of Style. My other employers wanted accuracy above all else, and were definitely were not worried if an abbreviation was used in an impression, etc. They just wanted us to type what they dictate, and get the work to them in a timely manner. My experience with the three MTSO's I have worked for thus far have been disappointing, I must say, between the low pay and frequently running out of work. If you don't necessarily need to be at home, I wouldn't go with the MTSO's either if you can help it. Good luck!

Is It Just Me, Or Do The Words Clinical Documentation Specialist Mean
Jun 05, 2015

Ahima certainly gives it a different spin than MT, and an article at Study.com lists desired or common requirements as associate's or bachelor's degree, with nursing, HIM, or health information technology, and medical coding expertise.  So where does Nuance get off expecting "lowly" MTs to do this stuff, with 100% flawless accuracy, on lowly MT pay having to Google everything? I mean, they do not even pay us enough to be "lowly" MTs, and yet expect us to Google and verify that do ...

Clinical Data Analyst -- Advice Needed?
Feb 27, 2015

I have been checking out job openings at my local hospitals for the past few weeks. This morning, an opening for a Clinical Data Analyst came up. The requirements for the position are high school diploma or equivalent and Medical Record Terminology or similar experience, etc. It does not list a salary range, but from what I know CDAs are paid very well. I was always under the impression that they required a degree (which I do not posess), but that does not seem to be the case here. Anyway, my ...
