Change from full- time to part- time. - JuG

I am still debating whether to enroll at Andrews or M-TEC. My husband is retiring in 2 years and I want to be able to work part-time after that. Is it realistic to think that I can complete the course at Andrews or M-TEC in 12 months at the most, work full time for a year and then part-time after that. I would want to be able to work from home. I guess the other question is "How long after graduating could I expect to earn enough to make it worth the investment, in a reasonable amount of time?"

First off, I am an MTEC graduate, and I think it is reasonable to complete that program in 12 months if you put your nose to the grindstone and work at it every day like a full-time job. I actually think Andrews would be the better choice, however, just because MTEC has been bought out a few times and I am not sure what kinds of changes have taken place there since I left. Andrews seems to have a little better reputation among the MT community nowadays. I graduated from MTEC in December 2008 and had a job in January.

To answer your second question, after almost 5 years as an MT having transcribed acute care, multispecialty clinic, single specialty clinic, and even some general transcription, and after having obtained my CMT, I would say never. MT is doing downhill fast and has gone downhill even in the short time I have been in it. I am currently training for another profession altogether. I was planning on staying in MT until retirement, but I don't think the profession is going to last that long, at least not in its current capacity. My highest pay as an MT was about $20 per hour average a few years ago, but now I am lucky to average about $12 per hour, and that is when the work is available. Those days that I have to wait 10 or 15 minutes for each job to come in, well those days the rate is well under $7 per hour. That has been my biggest problem - the drop-off in work for whatever reason.

It sounds like you are considering MT because it is one of the only legitimate work-from-home jobs out there, and I would caution you to really consider it carefully before you drop a bunch of money on training for this "legitimate" profession.

I went to M-Tec a few years ago, when I had finished the program they cut their time limit to complete the course I believe down to 9 months or possible 12, and extensions had to be paid for. I don't know what it is today but I have a ridiculous career loan from going to that school that started out as a principle of 3500, with a 10.7% interest rate and after paying $2000, IM NOT KIDDING, it is now finally back down to $3,000 because it acrewed that much interest on interest only payments while I was in school the first year. You can't even make a decent living on part-time wage in the MT field. I got a job right out of school, ONE job offer after applying at least 20 places and that was for full time at 6.0 cents a line, and I can tell you that first year I rarely made more than minimum wage and had way too much ESL, plus a QA that gave no advice or training and then a new QA who was a big bully who yelled at me for all the things the first QA never corrected me on for the first 18 months I worked there. Nice! You want a part-time job that pays decent from home do daycare! If you still think you want to do MT go to your local community college, most of their programs for MT are online and a lot cheaper plus usually have better placement assistance. Like the other poster I am also getting out of the field.

Does anyone care to share that if you are hired at optiscript part time will they let you change to full time easily? I know they are a small company and do not over hire so I do not know how easily this could be done.
