carpal tunnel - sm

Posted: Jan 21, 2010

I'm rapidly developing carpal tunnel.  I wonder if I can get MQ to give me some time off without having to take LOA to give my wrists a break?  Has anybody else had issues like this and how did accomodative was MQ?

I can relate, my wrists often ache. But I have - Kiki

done many things, some of which have really helped.....an ergonomic low-force split keyboard (Kinesis) really helped. I also wear wrist splints when typing.

As for MQ, I'm not really sure, but I have a strong feeling what they would do is just let you "quit" and tell you they will rehire you when you are ready, in which case you'd prob have to go through the hiring process and might not get the same line rate, etc. If that doesn't concern you, then no problem. And if they ARE trying to get people to quit like many of us believe, they might not even hire you back. But you could always look elsewhere after your break. But I also know from experience that simply taking a break won't solve your carpal tunnel problems. You need to either make some serious ergonomic changes or maybe see a doctor. Good luck.

Kiki - keyboard - have wrist pain too

Kiki. I also have wrist pain. I used a Microsoft ergonomic keyboard and have for years, but I still occasionally have wrist pain. I use the SoftFlex gloves, too. I looked online at the Kinesis keyboard and it looks like it splits much wider than the Microsoft. Can you move both sides to any position you want or are they stuck together at the top? Was it hard to get used to? When I first got the ergonomic keyboard, I almost threw it out the window. It drove me crazy, but now I find it hard to type on a regular straight keyboard. I'm thinking of making a switch

Thanks for the info.

I use the Kinesis Freestyle. I tried the Maxim but didn't like it. With the freestyle, there are 2 separate halves that are connected by an 8-inch cord. YOu need to get the VIP accessory kit that lets you tent the 2 sides. You can place the 2 halves in any position. I usually move it to different positions throughout my work day so I'm not constantly in one.

The keyboard has what they call a low-force keypad, which I know has helped my pain. You don't feel like you have to pound each key so hard; the keys are really responsive. Almost makes typing enjoyable!

As far as getting used to it, it did take me, I'd say, a few hours to really get used to it but after that I was flying on it and now I can NEVER go back to the traditional "ergo" keyboards. Fuggetabbout a regular keyboard--I can't even type on a regular keyboard at all anymore.

I know I sound like a sales person, and if anyone remembers back when I actually got accused of such on this board....that was too funny!

It's just that I love this darn keyboard so much! I SHOULD be a salesperson for it! Shoot, if this job goes bust....hmmmmmm.. NO. Anyway.....

I even had them re-map some of the keys. For instance, since with ASR we have to use the arrows with the delete key I moved those to the bottom right where they would be comfortable for me. I think they only charged about 30 bux. But you should figure out first where you want the keys and have them remap (if nec) beforehand. I didn't realize I needed to move the keys until after I got it then had to send it back and WAIT and type on the horrible keyboard until it came back. Not fun.

Anyway, I hope this helps. If you have any other questions about it I'd be happy to help. If you want to know exactly how I remapped the, just ask!

THANK YOU for this information, you should be a salesman for this company, LOL. Very valuable info for me as I am looking into a different keyboard. I already use an split keyboard, but still not quite right as far as keys not in the perfect place for me and having a split keyboard I can move around to my liking would be wonderful. I think you made a sale.
ORMT.....glad to help anyone who reads it....... - Kiki

I had to try a lot of keyboards before I found my perfect one. The kinesis freestyle might not be for everyone, but I love it. If you don't you can always return it.

I do strongly suggest if you are going to give it a go, to really study the keyboard layout and decide if you think certain keys should be in a different place before you buy it. For instance I needed a delete key near the arrows (easier when doing ASR). :)

Carpal Tunnel & Ergo Keyboards
Nov 12, 2011

I was wondering if anyone has tried either the Kinesis contoured, Kinesis Freestyle, Goldtouch, or SafeType keyboards. I am using a Microsoft ergo split keyboard now, but I am having more and more pain and numb/weird feelings in my arms and hands. It's getting to the point where I am having a lot of difficulty typing. I definitely need to invest in a more high-end ergo keyboard, but they are quite expensive and I am not sure which one would be best. Just looking for any experiences and pro ...
