Semicolons in vital signs??? - Acquisitions

Posted: Nov 05, 2013

Since when are vital signs separated by semicolons?  Did I miss something???

My feedback -

VITAL SIGNS:  Blood pressure is 183/111; pulse is 88;88, respiratory rate 18;18, temperature 97;97, oxygen 96%.96.

idiots - thats all I can say

When they hire idiots to proof our work, that's what you get... a bunch of semicolons!

Something strange going on - Nana

I had that with lab values last week. I really wonder what is going on here.

Probably more QA going offshore. - offensive

[ In Reply To ..]
2 punctuation errors, and you can fail an audit. It was verified once sometime back that QA was also going offshore. Not necessarily India, could be going to the Philippines. Philippines is where my BOB gets offshored (according to former TSM/CCM)

there was something about that the other day - that is nuts

[ In Reply To ..]
that person has too much time on his/her hands. The other day he or she was separating lab values with semicolons. This will only serve to confuse SR more than it already is and there's absolutely no purpose for it. I'd report that to my QC.

Let someone know! - Hammy

Definitely complain on that one and each time you believe you are correct, especially if we are being counted off for those mistakes!

semicolons - meds - MT

Would appreciate it if someone could talk more about when to use semicolons with meds.

Semicolons with meds - Hammy

Example: Lovenox 70 mg b.i.d.; Macrobid 100 mg every Monday, Tuesday, Friday; Lopressor 50 mg b.i.d.

Thanks - Here is a question - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Lovenox 70 mg 1 tablet b.i.d., Advair 50/250 one puff t.i.d., Macrobid 1 tablet daily.

Would there be any reason to place semicolons here?
Nope - Hammy

None on this one.

Between the dosage of the medication and the quantity, there should never be a comma?
Not any more, that was 1 of the changes in BOS. - NM

semicolons back in the day - L&L
[ In Reply To ..]
I was taught 100s of years ago to use semicolons if you did not place "and" in the sequence.

Also, any time there is a sequence that has an internal coma, you use a semicolon in place of the commas...such as: A history of right leg weakness; left arm, right face, and left leg numbness; right-sided facial droop; and nausea.

Also for medications, it used to be: Vytorin 10/20 mg, one tablet p.o. b.i.d. If there was a dosage and amount, you separated them with a comma.

This is the way I thought it was for meds but apparently they have changed this in the BOS.

Also I think they have changed stage numbers from Roman for some diseases, such as kidney.

Update...Did ask my manager and sure enough, NO semicolon's in vital signs... and no our QA are here in the US...

Semicolon rules - Dinosaur

[ In Reply To ..]
There is a website I find helpful when I have questions like this. I'm posting the link to the website below. Here are the rules for semicolons.

Rule 1
Use a semicolon in place of a period to separate two sentences where the conjunction has been left out.

Examples:
Call me tomorrow; I will give you my answer then.

I have paid my dues; therefore, I expect all the privileges listed in the contract.

Rule 2
It is preferable to use a semicolon before introductory words such as namely, however, therefore, that is, i.e., for example, e.g., or for instance when they introduce a complete sentence. It is also preferable to use a comma after the introductory word.

Examples:
You will want to bring many backpacking items; for example, sleeping bags, pans, and warm clothing will make the trip better.

As we discussed, you will bring two items; i.e., a sleeping bag and a tent are not optional.

Rule 3
Use either a semicolon or a comma before introductory words such as namely, however, therefore, that is, i.e., for example, e.g., or for instance when they introduce a list following a complete sentence. Use a comma after the introductory word.

Examples:
You will want to bring many backpacking items; for example, sleeping bags, pans, and warm clothing.

You will want to bring many backpacking items, for example, sleeping bags, pans, and warm clothing.

Rule 4
Use the semicolon to separate units of a series when one or more of the units contain commas.

Example:
This conference has people who have come from Boise, Idaho; Los Angeles, California; and Nashville, Tennessee.

Rule 5
Use the semicolon between two sentences joined by a coordinating conjunction when one or more commas appear in the first sentence.

Examples:
When I finish here, I will be glad to help you; and that is a promise I will keep.

If she can, she will attempt that feat; and if her husband is able, he will be there to see her.

Signs Job Outsourced
