My company was outsourced to M*Modal. - Jay

Posted: Jul 08, 2014

Hi:

My company has been outsourced to M*Modal. I am used to getting paid by the hour.

I wanted to know from transcriptonists who are presently hired by them, how much can I expect realistically to make in 4 hours working part-time from Tuesday to Saturday?

Can someone please respond to this post.

Thank you,

Worried about future pay.... :(

I have gone from $22 per hour down to $12. Others will tell you their stories, I am sure. At any rate, welcome! Wish I had happier news.

I work part-time (about 22-24 hours per week depending on the needs in our BOB) and net around $500 every 2 weeks if I have my usual accounts/dictators. Also, part-timers do not have any PTO, but are given X-many hours per year to take as unpaid time off (I don't remember how many).

Hopefully that info helps!

Tink, if you only work 22-24 hours a week and net $500.00 every 2 weeks, you are doing pretty good. I work 40 hours a week and barely make that on most checks, a little more if I am lucky. Pray you keep your same accounts because that is pretty good pay for part time work, in my opinion! :-)

I agree with you. nm - suzistkr

Agree that it is minimum wage but it works as a supplemental job and it is interesting work.

there are positive things to say about it. I hope the profession doesn't die away in the US.

...that I have the accounts I do now. I've been with MM for a really long time and have had some real stinker accounts where I could barely make my line counts and was crying every day because it was so awful. I know how it works around here and am praying that I don't get moved again anytime soon!!

It is hard when the sound quality is bad, etc., but still glad to have the job.

Unfortunately, you should be worried. - so sad

VR rate is only 60% of straight typing, and 99+% of the work is VR. MM VR is horrible. They will tell you the speech engine will learn, but I have been making the same corrections for years. It does not learn and regresses a lot. They will tell you you can do 3 times the number of lines. Not true. I still do the same number of lines due to the time I spend formatting the document and the massive number of MM VR output errors.

Line rate is 4 cents for most. Line is characters divided by 65. Minimum lines per hour is 150. This also works out to minimum wage basically. It is very important to note that you do not get paid for entering patient information and entering carbon copy information.

Also, quality requirement is 99.75 Minor errors are 0.25 points. Therefore, if you make 2 minor errors, you have now failed your audit. The report is to be transcribed verbatim. Therefore, you will lose points for "adding" or "missing" an article as one of the minor errors. VR editing, because of the way the human mind works, is harder. I have had to slow down the dictation in order not to miss or add these meaningless, picky "errors" which have effect on patient care or readability. This has really cut down on my line count.

Personally, I recommend getting out of transcription because so many facilities use MTSOs and line rates have been driven down because of the use of offshoring. I just finished school and am trying to break into this new field.

Do not go to work for this company for one minute. Find something else; especially if you were paid hourly and did straight transcription. No matter what they say, it is a lie. Read the posts below, do your homework, read the reviews of this company, they are the worst. It is such a shame when you read about people with good MT jobs and then they are gobbled up by this monster, because they lie to your employers. One MT posted it happened to her and the hospital where she worked is not satisfied with M*M at all, despite what they said. Most of the good work is sent to India, so if you were on a good account, you will never see that again. You will get nothing but voice, ESLs and berated at every turn. Again, run and don't look back.

It all depends on where you are placed and how good you are.

Personally, I'm fine here. As for pay, considering that in my area the going rate for a transcriptionist is $10/hour (min wage is 7.50), I make much better here than I would if I worked locally. I'm a high producer with about 10 accounts that aren't too bad and make about 19/hr currently according to my benefit rate (though it has dipped to 17/hr occasionally).

I have no idea how good you are, so you may make minimum. If you can, I would stick it out for a few months until you get things down and see how your pay is as it varies so widely with this company. However, if jobs come easy where you live, you may want to get your resume out, probably not in transcription anymore, as it is a dying field.

I hope it's not a dying field. I'm not quite convinced of that yet.

They have been saying it's a dying field for many years but it is still here although with less pay and possibly headed overseas.

The general theme of the presentations was "here are other jobs your experience qualifies you for," and "life after transcription." Oddly, really the only people saying transcription is still thriving were those trying to sell speech recognition, EHR, or those related to companies such as Nuance or Mmodal.

It could be that transcription will be here but it will be a low-paying job. They assume most will leave the profession, but I think there are people who don't want to lose this profession even with the low pay. Some like the job and don't want to go out to work. Also, it may be a supplemental income. I hope the choice remains for people to work in transcription in the US if they want to.

Being Outsourced To M-Modal
Jul 10, 2012

I have a few questions for anyone who is in fact an employee of M-Modal.  My current employer just informed us that we were being outsourced to M-Modal.  We, being 12-13 MTs, are really freaking out.  We are hearing all of these "not so good" reviews and really we do not know who or what to believe.  Management says we will be offered jobs individually with M-Modal, as they really want to keep the current MTs on the region and doing this hospital's transcription, but from what I gathe ...

My Hospital Outsourced To M*Modal.
May 05, 2015

So I've been a transcriptionist for 15 years, the last 8 years I've been self-employed, contracted to a local hospital (recently bought out by a bigger hospital), and several family practices and nursing homes.  The hospital decided to oursource transcription to M*Modal, with each of us getting an "offer" from M*Modal (thus preventing the employed transcriptionists from being able to draw unemployment, nice).  I accepted the offer while still looking into other jobs locally, ...

Outsourced Again
Dec 28, 2011

The hospital where I worked decided to outsource us. They did it in the worst way possible, they call us in for a meeting but it is not on the usual date of our dept meetings. The CFO, HR, and the new transcription company are at the head of the table. The CFO says, "the hospital has decided to award our transcription to ______ (starts with a W)." That's all he said! No gratitude (some have worked there for 40, 24, 11, 8 years), no severance package. By state or federal law, when they l ...

More Fields Being Outsourced - S/m
Jul 26, 2012

I was reading the Tampa Tribune last night.  There was an article regarding outsourcing.  It talked about x-rays and scans being sent to India and the Phillipines (which we all know happens), but the article said now insurance companies, instead of having nurses on staff to assist patients pre and post-op, as well as answering medical questions, will be using "overseas people" in, again, India and the Phillipines.  Why you ask?  Because they work for peanuts.  Personall ...

Signs Job Outsourced
Aug 11, 2013

I have read the conversations here with such deep compassion for the fear and hopelessness most are experiencing in this transition from proud profession to extinction.  From my cocoon of full benefit hospital system position, I still deeply empathized with my fellow MTs in distress.  I have the sense that I will soon join your ranks and would like to ask what are the signs that your hospital/service is preparing to "save money" by throwing their dedicated employees into the giant cess ...

Questions To Ask MT Service--being Outsourced...

Our transcription department was informed yesterday that we are going to be laid off and our work outsourced to 1 of 2 companies vying for the contract.  Of course, as in most cases, we transcriptionists have been given the option to apply to work for the company who is given the contract.  I'm wondering if any of you gals here might have suggestions as to what kinds of questions to ask the "recruiters" of these companies besides the obvious, i.e., pay per line, benefits, shift di ...

Possibly About To Be Outsourced To Mediscribes
Aug 07, 2013

Management says they are considering 4 MTSOs, and that we will probably be offered jobs with whichever they choose. Mediscribes is one of the four, so we have lots of questions about Mediscribes: Has anyone else here been hired by Mediscribes because their hospital outsourced to them? Did they keep you on the same account? Did they bring you on at one rate of pay, then cut your pay later (like Nuance does)? If yes, how much later and to what rate of pay? And for any Mediscribe ...

India Outsourcing Being Outsourced
Oct 21, 2013

Forgive me if this topic has been covered and/or beat to death, but were most of you aware that not only does Nuance outsource some/a good portion of the work to India, but that Nuance India actually outsources their work to other companies? It is one thing that they're sending it oversees in the first place, but then once it goes to another company, and potentially another one after that if they're anything like US companies... I have an issue with that.  This makes me so sick! ...
