Is this true PTO - newme

Posted: Mar 31, 2012

Ok I've been here like 3 months. Got my new manager's rules like 2 days ago. It said if you are scheduled to work holiday, you will (well obviously) but it also said you can request it off and will NOT be told yes or no until 3 days prior to the day. Three days? I mean I wasn't planning on taking major holidays off for a year since I'm new, but I can't plan my life around 3 days notice for Christmas and Easter. Second during a meeting she told people that all the previously granted PTO for April has been reneged because her needing coverage. I would be LIVID to have my vacation, especially if I paid for tickets or arranged for a family reunion, ruined after it being approved. Is this typical for MModal or is this just her style? I will not stay here long if this is typical as I am not married to my job.

Never heard of such a thing! - Trampled underfoot

It's just her. I've never had them renege on approved PTO and always know well ahead of time if holiday PTO has been approved. I should add that I have heard that they occasionally allow a few other MTs to have off on a holiday based on low work flow, which would, I assume, be a last-minute sort of thing.

Reneging on approved PTO would be a deal-breaker for me!

this was something that was specifically for her team and I figure if she's really stringent about following it, which I don't get from other emails and meetings I've attended, I'll just ask to change teams or something. It looks like something she made originally when she started and had not updated because it talks about Galaxy and Spheris too.

My TL required that we put in the req for PTO a month in advance at least if possible, which I feel is reasonable; however, there were more than a few times when I had air/hotel/concert tix, etc., already purchased and wouldn't receive approval until a week before I was to leave. After the 1st time that happened, I decided I would either call in sick for my week or quit. Like you, I didn't marry may job.

Holidays were a lil different. She was really pretty lenient as far as flexing your wk sched so you could do family things w/in that 24-hr day, but you still needed to get your hrs in if you had put in early enough and weren't approved.

Good luck. Hope it doesn't end in divorce like mine did. :S

Thanks from what I read it's NOT allowed the way her policy is written.

if I had paid for my tickets etc. - slave wages

I'd have to tell her too bad. I mean come on now.

Pretty standard far as I know - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
...

Not standard for, my CCM is pretty reasonable. - you do have to give notice

[ In Reply To ..]
as with any place, and she does expect reasonable notice. But as far as reneging on time already put in or requested, thats unethical and never experienced that happening before.

I remember times when we had really high volumes and were asked if we could do extra to help out because people were out on PTO, never not once heard of her calling those people back in and telling them hey you gotta work because we need you...even though your PTO was approved.

Again, must be one of those case by case things. Not my experience though.

Thanks - newme

This will be third thing I've seen in her emails that are different than company wide policy. The other I called her on (it had to do with editing questions when I was full QA) and she fixed to the current standard.

No life, no 2-legged family, so work the hdays - Then no work those days.

If I put in for time off, lots of times don't hear either way. Usually work so others can be with their families. And I can eat a Christmas or Thanksgiving Dinner in about 10 minutes or while a doc is fumbling looking for lab values.

No, that is not how it is supposed to be - Just Sayin

handled. Per the PTO policy, holidays are to be formally approved or denied by the CCM at least 35 days prior to the holiday. I would definitely call her out on that, or go higher up if you need to.

Sorry, this was supposed to go under OP - Just Sayin NM

I will make sure I reread the company policy and when I take time off I will make sure it's followed. I still can't believe she reneged on those people's PTO. I've NEVER heard of such a thing except for at smaller companies...ever.

So just taking some time to get used to that. Even though "death do us part" I still feel spiritually connected. I get some invites to friends and will stop by to wolf a meal and then back home to work. I have 60 nanny goats, a few billes, 45 kids since Christmas so don't have time to get lonely, 60 acres of pasture and goat land to roam/maintain, peach and pears trees, and possibly a garden if there's no drought. Being sad and depressed is just sad and depressing so try not to spend time there. I know in a short while I'll be reunited with my Lord and Saviour and hopefully all those who have left before me to a much better place. I've been an MT for ?30 years so know what hell is like and sure don't want to spend any more time there once I leave this place.

Been toying with the idea of taking in a foster kid just so I don't get bored, but have some rearranging, remodeling and praying to do about it, and it that works out, gettng out the nail gun and adding more and more bedrooms. just so sad there are so many kids out there with nobody to take care of them.

But if anybody has room and grub for 1 person and 100 goats and a donkey with an attitude might go nomadic for while and roam to greener pastures. Oh that reminds me, I took the goats over to my neighbor's 160 acres and the donkey hasn't come back yet!! That's it she's grounded. She's such a flirt. All my neighbors have horses. Guess I'll change her name from Augusta (her name when she was given to me) to JezzyBell.

I have worked for Medquist/MModal for almost 10 years and have never had such an experience. My experience has been that PTO is usually approved within a few days of my request. Never been denied PTO time. You will be hard pressed to find any better PTO benefits with any other transcription company.

not with my CCM - jojo

We can ask off up to a month in advance for holidays and she usually gets back to me within a few days. Also I have never had PTO approval taken back once approved. There is no way anyone can plan any kind of life with these rules. I would go higher up if I were you.

I think full-time MT/ME's with benefits are required to do 150 lines per hour or 1200 for an 8-hour shift, right?  Full-time without benefits and part-time need 100 lines per hour. If the poster below is correct about newbies getting 4-cents per line ASR (no mention of how much for transcription), that means full-time with benefits will get $6 per hour = $48 per day = $240 per week = $12,480 per year, NOT including fed and state taxes, Medi ...

It's All True...
Jan 18, 2013

Everything that's been posted on here about the Softscript recruiter is absolutely true.  I accepted a job with them, then thought it over because of the lack of PTO, and wrote in to tell the person handling my paperwork that I had reconsidered due to the lack of PTO.  My email was forwarded back to the recruiter and she sent me a snarky email that said basically, you get 3.5 days the first year and 5 the second, and said, "please explain."  I told her that I had reconsidered ...

that MQ sent out that stupid letter stating not to worry, we will still need MTs, and that off-shoring will remain one of many solutions (including VR).  I really have no idea whether we will still be here after the first of the year or not (although that's what a lot of people on this board thought LAST year and it didn't happen....but WHY would they waste their precious money sending that letter to everyone if they planned on nixing us all soon?  Doesn't make sense.&nb ...

My Wish May Come True! Now I'm In A Pickle.

TWO job offers today. One is for my old hospital. I never thought it would happen again. I tried for 3 years to get my old hospital job back but never heard a peep. Thanks to still networking with my old cohorts, I got a call today. I might be a FT EMPLOYEE this time, not I.C. I had the choice of I.C., PT, or FT. I chose FT because of the insurance, but left it up to the HIM director "whatever she needed".   HaHa! Was so excited, I forgot to ask the pay rate. I hope I sounded cool as a cuc ...

Are There Any True IC Positions?
Jul 22, 2013

I am looking for a true IC position where I can work when I am available due to being handicapped. I sometimes have some very bad days and can't get out of bed as a result of it and I keep losing jobs. I am also wondering if there are any companies that pay MTs what they're worth on VR. I feel like we do twice the work for less pay. It's a lot harder if you ask me, especially if you have an account full of doc's who suck at dictation and sound more like auctioneers than a do ...

Unbelievable But True

So Mmodal decided to eliminate my position and I was without work for quite some time.  I took my 401K distribution to survive on.  Just figured out my taxes and low and behold I owe what my 401 K distribution was.  This country needs to get with it.  My family would not have survived without that 401K distribution to live on, yet the government feels that I am overpaid or something.  So sad.  I am so disgusted.  I put my heart in my job, lost it, and did what ...
