I had a dream... - FTRMT

Posted: Mar 05, 2010

What happened to our profession?  I thought we were "Medical Language Specialists"?  We should be compensated for our expertise and knowledge.  I have a solution to our latest, serious, escalating problems with this "armed robbery in plain sight" of our well-earned, inadequate pay...in order to be a medical language specialist who listens to unintelligible doctors with foreign accents; doctors dictating 5 words in 1 word; background noises of nurses, etc. in background singing, yelling, laughing; show-off, smart alicky dictators who really don't care but are the first to point out errors in their, uh....dictation; doctors who came to this country but really can't, like in a previous forum, "order a Big Mac" let alone dictate clear and concise English; doctors who JUST DON'T CARE BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIKE THIS PART OF THE THEIR JOBS BUT HERE IS THE REQUIRED DICTATION..."This is a hssssstfsl on Dnlrzmtnn."  Do I need to say more???  The doctors get paid ridiculous $$ for their inadequate dictation skills, etc.!!  Now, I need to be fair here and say that not ALL doctors give us "crappy" dictation.   I think we should go to HIPPA and the Joint Commission and the Association for Medical Transcriptionists and Higher Education and turn this profession around....it will require a 4-year college degree!  Yes, we then can be paid for what we are worth!  And, once (if) that requirement becomes official, we would expect MQ to pay for our on-line education (after all, it's a requirement, if approved, and definitely required for the "First Time Right" documents), and then "make them pay" even more for now we have the diplomas to demand the pay for what we are worth!  The powers-that-be would, in our new and improved and RESPECTED profession, would make this a requirement or impose penalties ($$ to go for our further education) for the MTs who work overseas for American outsourcing companies and THAT would most likely result in closings of these medical transcription companies that conduct their businesses overseas because they were hiring "cheap" labor of "medical transcriptionists" due to greed but now are losing profits rapidly (plus, no First Time Right) documents being produced there!  Those here who now have the degrees and who transcribe for America's hospitals, medical groups, etc. will, ultimately, get RESPECT, demand higher pay, finally have a profession that isn't looked upon as "oh, you're a typist," and more medical transcription/editing jobs will be to our avail here in the USA!!!  Then, if we have any more pay "docked" from us from the greedy CEOs because they decided we don't need any assistance with our work and they hired more lawyers to find legal ways to "screw" with us,  we can at least survive in this profession and we can afford it, depending on if it's legal to cut our pay the way they are doing it!!!!  I'm tired of "paying" for doctors' shortcomings and MTSOs and doctors and everybody else not RESPECTING US!  You cannot leave a "fly-by-night" MT school and think you're going to have a First Time Right document, so good luck and God bless!  It takes a special group of professionals with knowledge and experience and intestinal fortitude to do what we do!!!!!  What say you?

Alas, the dream is dead - oldMT

I don't like to be the bearer of bad news, but we have all heard about the expert buggy whip makers whose jobs became obsolete. They trained and invested a lot of money in their businesses, but ended up without a job when the automobile came in. That, ladies, is us. We can complain all we want, but it is happening to us. I myself have been working as an MT for 25 years. Never thought I would see it happen. Those docs who insist on transcription? They will retire pretty soon. The hospitals will be going the cheapest way they can. MQ will use us as long as they need us and then we will be left by the wayside. After all, we know what kind of company we work for - makes you proud, right? It's time to move on, move forward.

uh, dream on... I don't feel any winds of change in the near future. It was hundreds of years ago that people like Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson were warning the American people not to let businesses run the country.

ppl need to get involved, get informed, get up and go VOTE for change. We as the hardworking backbone of the USA need to take a stand and stop MONSTER CORPORATIONS from running this country hiding behind money grubbing puppet politicians.

Until people GET ACTIVE and PARTICIPATE, john and jane Q public are going to continue to be chewed up and spit out, treated as expendable resources or slave laborers.

This is what I tell people when they complain about how horrible their jobs and finances are: DO YOU VOTE? If your answer is NO, then you get what you play for!

got to respectfully disagree - NE MT

Oracle, I like you and I agree with you most of the time, but people did vote with this last election because O promised to do something about outsourcing and punishing companies who did it. That promise has landed on the pile of many other broken promises by him and all other politicians. Did MQ or any other outsourcing company get punished- no, they just found more loopholes to justify outsourcing and cutting our pay, such as aging labor source or having a US person QA the India reports so they can claim it was done in the US.

The bottom line is nobody cares that we are being paid slave wages, that medical records and personal info are being bought and sold on the black market- they just want cheap, cheaper, cheapest. Quality is a thing of the past- look at MQ new policy.

Time to get out of the MT career altogether while our skills are still marketable and try to make a difference somewhere else where we are appreciated.

Once again, it's an easy thing to blame the current president, rather than to realize that the mess was created years before he took office. There's no way he's gonna be able to fix the damage the Bush monarchy left in four years.

The Bush family had (has) a lot invested in corporate america.
But the President made these promises and broke them, - anon

he LIED to the people!!! What a surprise! Remember, after he got in office, he said the Americans don't really care about those outsourced jobs, so he wasn't going to do anything. Then why did he make those promises if he thought that? Because he just flat out lied to the people about it when running for election.

EVERY president has LIED to and broken promises to the people. Who knows. Maybe some multi-trillion dollar corporation has him in their backpocket... I haven't voted in years, stopped when I finally realized that our government isn't running our country anymore, having turned it over to the 1% corporate owning trillionaires. Presidents and politicians are just fronts to keep the masses in check.
That is exactly my point, they LIE, - anon

all the time. He ran on campaign promises and needs to be held to them. It is not okay that we are lied to by these people. Why bother to vote for them if it is okay that they don't mean the promises they make to the US people. I am well aware that they lie, been around for quite a while now. I do not accept that it is okay to be lied to, it is wrong, makes a person simply a LIAR, lacking in character, cannot be trusted.

It should be very important to him to keep these jobs for the US citizens rather than condoning the offshoring of our work. He is our President, not theirs, he made promises to us, not them. CORRUPTION EVERYWHERE.

Maybe we should give the pres more than 1 year to fix the mess he walked into? Just a thought. I think that, considering what he inherited from the prior administration, he has worked wonders. At least we're not on a slippery slope anymore.
no, we're at the bottom of the slope buried under crushing piles of national debt, etc. nm - x

My Dream Job
Oct 08, 2012

I was offered my dream job over the weekend.  I don't want to name the company as they were great.  The woman who hired me was terrific.  I know I wasn't their first choice as I got the call on Saturday, could I start right away.  I filled out the contract, printed all the information.  It took me all day Saturday.  I was anxious and excited.  As the day went on I noticed little things that I wasn't told about the platform.  There was no sp ...

Am I In A Bad Dream Or What?
Jan 15, 2013

Suddenly, all of my reports are horrible, the dicators are so bad and the sound quality so low and fuzzy. Somebody please wake me up from this bad dream. Yesterday I had a dictator who was so annoying, when he said "median raphe" and VR put "middle finger," you can't imagine (or maybe you can) how badly I wanted to keep the VR version! I hope this isn't the way it's going to be from now on. This is like the account I had when I first started with MM (then MQ). I thought I ...

Getting Out Of MT - Am I Too Old For Dream Job
May 28, 2013

I will be starting college this fall.  I am no longer going to be in transcription - just can't do it anymore.  I want to be an RN.  After I finish college I will be 40.  Now, I know 40 isn't old, but is it too old to be a nurse?  I feel like hospitals and clinics would want the 20 something nurses who have endless amounts of energy.   ...

Dream Kitchen/office Ideas
Jul 30, 2010

Hi my fellow MTs!  Pinch me I am dreaming!  My SO is building us a new home, and Monday we meet with the kitchen designer/cabinetry dude to layout the kitchen, which will include my office. He was insistent that he build a corner desk overlooking the woods, the best view of the house!  He did not want me holed off in another room of the house, but wants to keep me in the heart of it!  Yes, he has an ulterior motive... preparing scrumptious meals while I work... but thats fine ...
