Assembly line workers - anon2

Posted: Nov 16, 2013

I was just sitting here thinking about the kind of work that we are all doing and what it boils down to is that we have become assembly line factory workers but instead of assembling widgets, we're assembling medical reports.

assembly line workers - wish I got their money

[ In Reply To ..]
I know of three or four assembly line workers and they make at least 4 times what I make per hour. I went to school to learn this godforsaken job, they did not. They work a shift of 8 hours and if they work more than 8 hours they get OT, I do not. The comparisons can go on and on, but you are 100% right, except this production line we are on is like a production line in a third world country.

Good points ... - anon2

That's sad that we're lower than assembly line workers in a 3rd world country in employment respectability. Like you, I went to school for this too. I was in college for Nutrition and dropped out because I was pulled in to the production/QA bonuses, overtime, etc in the late 1990s. My paychecks were *crazy* back then.

I keep having that image in my mind of the opening scene of a TV show from the 1980s (Laverne and Shirley?) of 2 women on an assembly line, leaning on each other and staring off into space while their widgets are rolling by on the conveyor belt. Only for me, it's medical reports instead of widgets and I can hear my "pause time" clock ticking in the background.

yep huzband works on assembly line, is - union

and sure comes out better than we do. If we didn't have his job, we'd be truly destitute.

sweatshop - anon

I liken my job these days as to a sweatshop type atmosphere especially since we are monitored for idle time and mouse clicks. Feel I can't even stop for a minute and talk to my child or I'll be over what is considered an acceptable idle time.

The reason I started working at home in the - no name

first place was for the flexibility. Little did I know that it was going to eventually get far worse than an off-site job with the monitoring and big-brother tactics----all for a job that pays production and not hourly? I will never get that part; if I am not working, I am hurting myself and no one else. I get that we have to have somewhat of a schedule, but to monitor keystrokes and idle time?

Monitored to death - Ridiculous

[ In Reply To ..]
They have to justify their existence! I am with you; if the work gets done, who cares. If I can do 8 hours of work in 6 or 7, then I should be rewarded and allowed to log off or just leave my computer on so I show 8 hours. Sometimes I do that. If I make my lines and lord knows I should do more if I can, but I am so spent, I just take that last hour or so and type perhaps two or three reports. As far as the keystrokes and idle time, go for it MM, knock yourself out. If it ain't good enough for you then fire me. This company certainly doesn't meet my expectations of a good job.

My brother in law worked assembly line for GM for 30 years, union, made $25 an hour. He worked 30 minutes out of every hour and spent the other 30 minutes in the break room playing cards (mandated, not screwing off) and my sister gets $1700 a month survivor benefit, not even her own SS earnings. I wish I had done that instead of MT.

Used to be an assembly line worker.sm - Dead and dying

and they only reason I am doing this god-forsaken job is that my plant closed down and we all lost our jobs. Of course, when I started doing this many moons ago, it was a half-decent way to make a living. Now every day when I sit down at my computer for another day of torture and monotony for pennies I think about how unlucky I am. I would have been retired by now with a real live pension. Gawd, I miss the smell of diesel fumes!

Are Unenthusiastic Workers Hurting Your Business’s Bottom Line?
Jun 24, 2013

By Sarah Halzack,  Updated: Monday, June 24, 9:15 AM If employees don’t like their boss or aren’t stimulated by their work, can that lack of enthusiasm weigh on a company’s bottom line? That was the question that Gallup set out to answer in a new study that compared workers by categorizing them in to three groups: “engaged” workers, those who are passionate about and committed to their work; “not engaged,” those who are coasting; and &ld ...

Something We Workers-at-home Need To Consider...
Jan 21, 2010

when I started telecommuting full time.It finally penetrated my consciousness a couple of weeks ago that every year, when it came time to renew my auto insurance policy, I used to get a call from a local agent, and we'd go over the policy, making sure there were no changes. One of the questions was always how many miles did I drive to and from work each day, along with the current odometer reading, and the estimated number of miles driven each year.I haven't gotten one of those calls i ...

They Want Third Shift Workers, But....
Dec 12, 2011

So sorry for the rant, but I am so tired of companies wanting us all to cover third shift, but don't want to pay anything extra when we do and if they do it's something like a quarter of a penny, what in the world is that?   I know I shouldn't complain, but this shift is HARD to work, especially when you have little ones.  Just a little frustrated tonight, and I know there are people who have it worse than I do, but I don't have anywhere else to vent.  Thanks ...

American Workers Have Changed--And Not For The Better
Nov 08, 2011

I've talked with several MTs recently who work for different companies. The companies have to send out reminders to the MTs that they are supposed to be at work at specific times. They also are having trouble with MTs just taking off without arranging for coverage of their accounts. The list goes on and on. What bothers me most though is the attitude of workers. Work was not easy years ago, but people did it with courage and integrity. You don't see much of that anymore.   &nbs ...

I will be interviewing soon for a position at Accentus.  I want to get the opinions of any current workers.  Do they run out of work often?  Is the Apex platform anything close to the Escription platform?  Is the STAR team really worth the extra per line or is it too much to take in?  I have seen posts on here from last year, but want to see how they are currently.  Any input is greatly appreciated.  Thanks. ...

New Commercial Regarding Workers' Rights & IC Status
Aug 26, 2010

I live in California and just now my husband called my attention to the TV. Once the pharmaceutical ambulance chasers get on the subject of IC versus employee, I have a suspicion things are gonna ...

Or, if still determined to pay on production, then acknowledge overtime worked (you know we do it, you just don't want to acknowledge it, or pay for it), and increase cpl earned beyond 8 hours. Pay MTs more per line for typing horrible-quality voice files. Pay them more for ESL docto ...

Co-workers Signing Off Shift Early
May 16, 2011

Do any of you have this problem? There are several us on one particularly account. They will either sign off 5-6 hours into their 8 hr shift (saying they've met their minimum quota)or sometimes on weekends just leave work not done til the next day. I have the last shift and have to stay until all docs are finished no matter how late. Therefore, I get "mop up" duty every day. Any helpful suggestions? Oh, by the way, they "cherry pick" the short reports and I get left with the extremely long ...
