This is a tough age.  I don't know if this is your oldest child or if you have been through this phase before, but for the next few (2-4) years they become defiant and rebellious and value their peers much more than you.  My 3 always had excellent grades, even at this age, but they did get into some skirmishes and a little trouble here and there with their friends.

Do you REALLY know his friends and what he does when he's with them?  I would try talking to him, calmly, and ask him if there's something bothering him.  Does he still have a good relationship with his dad?  I have 2 boys and 1 girl, and I know my boys relate much more to dad than me and will often open up more to him.  Maybe your husband could try getting him to open up.  It's good that he has basketball.  I always felt sports were a good outlet and just keep the lines of communication open with him.  This does pass, but if you really see a change in his behavior that seems out of c  ontrol, I'd talk to the school counselor.
