it is a good idea for untrained civilians to be brandishing weapons in combat situations, and that is exactly what a campus shooting would be. If you have never been in a such a situation, I can see that it would be easy to think as you do. Having been in such a situation and seen the wide variety of reactions from appropriately trained personnel in their first encounter, I can knowledgeably disagree. Yes, someone could have taken out the shooter. They also could have increased the body count of innocents. Being able to shoot at paper target is very different from able to kill a living human being, even if that person is trying to kill you.
The best answer is an increase in properly trained and armed security and alarms in every classroom, lecture hall, and dorm.
No one even addresses the psychological ramifications, they just think, "If I have a gun, I will handle the situation and be fine." If you do not have adverse affects from taking the life of another human, then you should have spent your money on a psychiatrist, not a gun.
