I have always had at least 2 sets of keys to my parent's house. When I moved out when I was 18 into my own house, they made sure that I had keys to their house and told me that I would always have a home there. They even have keys to my house. I would feel very insulted and hurt if they ever asked me to give their keys back. It is basically like saying you are no longer welcome here. I definitely wouldn't have asked for the keys back. It probably made him feel like he wasn't wanted around. It just doesn't seem like a motherly thing to do.
