I second the Scat Mats. I never had to use them as my dogs allow me on the furniture!!! How about meeting him halfway.....put a sheet on the couch and take it off when your son comes to visit. Or, I wonder if this would help.....put a large cookie sheet on each cushion and place smaller metal  pans on each cookie sheet. Make sure the cookie sheets are placed slightly toward the edge of the cushion. When your Lab gets up on the couch, he'll knock over the cookie sheet contraption and the noise might startle him. (But, if he is like my golden, he'll just keep on truckin' and do what he wants to do.  )
