This certainly is a tragedy.  The miscarriage alone is enough of a heartbreak, but what happened to your friend on top of that is just horrible.  I can't say there is any amount of money that could replace the ability to have a biological child; but if your friend isn't interested in getting a decent malpractice sort of settlement, maybe they could look into the actual cost of adoption in case that's an avenue they are willing to undertake to have a child.  A "fair settlement" might be the financial cost of going through this process.  Just a thought....hope this helps some.
