I finally got a chance to read the NY Times article by Mike McIntire. A very interesting insight as to how a bill could become a law.
Citizens in Illinois "voiced outrage" when they became aware that Exelon Nuclear did not disclose low level radioactive leaks. While the people of Illinois did not have Erin Brockovich, they did have their newly elected Senator, Barack Obama. Apparently, Senator Obama took up the cause- which is exactly what one would expect from a guy who rails against the machine of lobbyist, pac's, and the status quo in government. The only problem is, the people got shafted, and Senator Obama got two new fundraisers for his Presidential campaign, as well as 214 employee donors from Exelon giving (as of December 2007) over $190,000.00. I guess the citizens action group didn't have access to the same resources as Exelon executives. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that David Axelrod, Obama's chief strategist was also a consultant for Exelon. This does not past the smell test. |
