No, you don't have to have experience to take your certfication exams. I am in school for my HIT degree (Health Information Technology) , which also covers studies in coding - which I plan to concentrate in after school - and I work for a hospital system, in 2 of their multi-specialty clinics as office support. There, my duties include coding. I transferred to the office (used to work in the hospital as a unit secretary and nurse tech) as a receptionist, and in the 8 months since, have been gradually asked to do more coding, as well as release of information, and transcription editing. In this time I have inquired to other medical records depts at other hospitals and am finding that the coding students are getting jobs as new coders if they are already working in the medical records depts or in clinics, where the mgr's get to know them and know that they are in school, and when they graduate they seem to get best shot at opening coding positions. Yes, it can be hard to get a job with no experience, so for those wanting to become coders, I suggest getting at least a part time job in a medical records dept or at a clinic. I know of others who worked their way in with the same manner; in fact, one of my co-workers in the office was recently asked to become the new biller. Work your way in and let your studies be known, and don't give up.
