I've found that an air freshener with a scent like lavendar or vanilla helps me sleep, espeically the air fresheners that look like candles (but I don't use a sleep mask). I have thick curtains that keep it dark and fairly quite. I make sure I have a quilt or heavy blanket to sleep under that makes me feel all cozy and warm. I turn the ringer off on the phone. I keep a notebook by the bed for any ideas that come into my head while I'm trying to get to sleep. I drink a glass of warm tea or hot chocolate shortley before going to bed and have found that a warm bath helps relax me. I did eventually learn to sleep through lawnmowers, garbage trucks, and sirens (we live 1 block from a hosptial and a few blocks from a fire station).
Hope this helps,
