I make my own yogurt 2 gallons at a time. Can keep going without re-purchasing new yogurt for starter for several months. Strain the finished yogurt down to 1 gallon. Eat yogurt every day, use in recipes, use for protein shakes. Use the yogurt whey in any recipe that calls for buttermilk, like making my own bread. It's worth it to invest in a bread machine. You can get them used on ebay -- very cheap. I make bread for about 40 cents a loaf that's more nutritious than anything you can buy. I buy flour 20 pounds at a time from Costco for $3.45 (the cost of a single loaf these days!). Meat is not the centerpiece of every meal. As in Asian cooking, it's more like a condiment. This is healthier anyway. Alternative forms of protein. Eggs & combining grains/legumes. That sort of thing.
It sounds time-consuming but it isn't. The bread & yogurt take 5 minutes to prep, then they do it on their own while I'm working.
