Word 2007 does have its issues/quirks. We are having problems with its compatibility with our programs too. If you can locate a copy of Word 2003, I recommend you get one. I bought a copy from e-bay. It was used, but I only paid $40 for it, and it works just fine. You can still have Word 2007 or other versions on your computer too, just don't overwrite your other versions is you are able to find a copy of 2003.
