I am just curious as to what line count standards are out there. What are your line count requirements for the day and how much do you use your QA for things like missing encounters, unable to ID patients, incorrect work types? Where I work our standards are relatively lower than other places, however, we also are required to match encounters, determine the work type, send an email for each work type or inrcorrect MRN, create a temporary patient if we cannot find the patient anywhere in the system (which there are 2 different systems we can research). We are required to type all work types, we do not have specific accounts (honestly, I have no problem with this one....the variety is nice). I pretty much have a stack of instructions on how to handle any given situation, regardless of the time it consumes. Today we were given a list of each month's average line count, along with the lowest and the highest. So, there are some who do fantastic and others not so much. I luckily fall into the middle, even though I should probably be at the higher end. Thanks for any info, thoughts, or flames (which I usually get anytime I post anything, but lets' face it, they keep things interesting).

I read somewhere the average was 200 lines per hour. On a good day, I get 200 lines per hour. On a bad day, I get maybe 150 lines per hour. It all depends on the dictator and other situations such as interruptions, letters, and time spent finding things, etc.

NOTE: There are some speeders out there who type double that.

and the at-home typists are required to maintain 1200 line counts per day (as opposed to 1000 in house typists). This works out to 6000 lines a week and 24,000 lines a month. We get incentive for anything over 1200 lines at 0.03 cents a line, anything over 1500 lines at 0.05 cents a line - I usually average about 100 bucks a paycheck in incentive - (experienced 18 years - 12 acute inhouse typing)

Where I work we have a minimum line count of 350 LPH which we have to maintain to remain in good standing and thereby keep our job. This is for all work types, all shifts, all employees.

Wow. Is that for Speech Recognition only? Both? Acute Care or Clinic? My hands would fall off if I had to do 350 straight transcription lines per hour, every hour, 8 hours a day -- my head is dizzy just thinking about it. I wish I could get one of those paychecks.

I'm curious what the averages were in your company and the highest and lowest?

Personally I cannot straight type 8 hours a day, luckily on good days I can get 275 to 300 lph. On bad dictator days I am still able to get around 175 to 200.

I wish I had incentive pay like someone below stated. Of course, I wish I had enough work that would boost me to incentive pay. oh, I digress.

daily requirement, it it by pay period, 10,000 lines for FT and 5000 for PT every two weeks. Though since we are all IC where I am that I don't see how it really matters, as long as the work gets done and done in TAT. I do between 18K and 20K lines every two weeks so meet our "requirement". We all have assigned doctors, do not have to mess with demographics (yippee on that) at all, if we think something is wrong we drop an email to our contact at the hospital but that is rare. The MTSO does not publish a line count list for which I am glad since I think it is a bit demoralizing and in our case it would not reflect someones work drive as some MTs only do one doctor who does not do a lot of dictation therefore has a much smaller line count, and others have 4 or more to do which gives them a lot of lines. This is how true IC should be.

I was wondering if anyone knows exactly what OSI cuts out of their line counts? Seeing as they use a remote website for line counts, it is pretty obvious they cut corners with what MTs get paid on. I was just wondering WHAT are the cutting? Do they only pay 1 space? Do they not pay if you copy and paste? Do they only pay on a % per page - meaning if you have little on 1 page you aren't going to get any credit for those lines, etc? Just curio ...

I know this has been discussed before, but what is up with these line counts? I used to have no problem doing 200+ lph. Now, I work at the same pace on an account with less ESL speakers and I struggle to get my required 150 lph. According to the Escript, I'm doing an average of 300 lph on VR but usually at the end of 8 hours, I don't top 1100 liines most days. On Dictaphone's ExSpeech, i used to consistently do 1800-2400 a day on a combination. Hi - I have a question regarding counting templates. I have a new doc who wants me to only count what he dictates, and not the templated review of systems, past medical history, social history, etc. which is all unchanged (unless he says to change it). Do you cut and paste your work into a "count" file to get the total, or do you tell the doctor that it has to be included in the count. And what about the times he does make changes to the "templated items". I welcome any suggestions. ...

Is anyone else suspicious about how they are calculating our line counts? I have been siltting here VERY diligently and typing like crazy these last few days and my counts seem to be going DOWN!!! I have been an MT for over 10 years doing hospital work. I have never been able to do much over 200 lines an hour straight typing except for the rare occasions I get several eye surgeries in a row that are canned. Usually I fall below this. My account is not difficult, but I do have a couple of different hospitals and of course many dictators.
