explaining why I billed what I did on an invoice. This MD pays by the hour. He set the hourly wage and now I have to justify why it took as long as it did. This is a new physican whom I have worked for for only 2-3 weeks in a specialty that is new to me in a state I don't live in.

Anyone else ever have to do this?

I charge 0.14 per 65 characters plus spaces. He's a cardiologist with a big-time middle eastern accent. I think the majority of MTs charge this way. You can find line counting programs on-line that you can set to your specifications that will count the files you want to bill and generate an invoice at the same time. You can also use the count in Word, using characters and spaces, then generate your own invoice. I would get him to change the billing method to the character line method and make sure you charge a rate that will yield a profit for yourself. Tell him this way, it doesn't matter how much time you take and that no one pays remote MTs by the hour anymore, and this is the way it's done.

Word 2010. No problems. It would be helpful if you name the platform you are talking about and how you think it is messing up the line count.

I spend enormous amounts of time doing clervical work for free at the beginning of a report..looking up doctor names that are not on the lists we have been given, figuring out which is the date of admit, consult, etc. If everything was programmed in and we just had to download a report and transcribe, we would be making a lot more and if the speech recognition would stop putting words down that the doctors are not saying so that we do not have to clean it all up we would have more time to ...

Holy Crow....I knew there were changes made, but didn't think that everything changed. Nothing on the screen looks the same, starting with the log-in screen which is the only thing that looks simple to use. It really hurts the line count bad. So far, I have had a lot of documents that require quite a bit of formatting - H&Ps, consults and ER reports from several facilities with each having different requirements and everyone wanting the ROS and PE different. Also, lack of punctation is hurting a lot too. I can't wait until I get out of here. Just 8 more months and counting! ...

Ive never not given a notice, but I interviewed today and might get the job. You all know the deal, I just can't afford to work here and they want to fill the position Im trying for immediately. Do you think after only 6 months, I have to give them a notice? If so, how much of one? It feels so wrong to just up and quit, but I can't pay my bills! Why is it that MTs (especially the ones who are starting out) have the opportunity to transcribe dictated reports from doctors that sound half dead, like they are using their last breath to dictate a report? It's amazing to me when QA tells me that they can make out everything these doctors say. What do the more seasoned MTs think about this? ...
