insurance info - cindy

Posted: Jul 09, 2011

My husband lost his job two weeks ago and we just got the COBRA info and it will be $1100 to continue our insurance.  I was wondering if anyone out there has insurance on their own?  How much do you pay a month and who is it through.  I am looking to get my own insurance because I have a lot of health problems and take over a dozen different medications.  Any info or advise is greatly appreciated.  TIA

Contact NASE (National Association for the Self Employed). I am employed through an employer (I'm NOT an IC) but the company I work for is just too small to offer health insurance. So, they referred me to these NASE people and I think I actually got a pretty good deal...considering how expensive this junk is.

They (NASE) put me in contact with a local agent who gave me all the options available in my state including prices on all the plans. I was able to score some dental, some life insurance, and even some health insurance with BC/BS for under $300/month (for myself only, family plans were more of course). What I could afford is totally low end and doesn't cover a lot of stuff, but it's better than nothing.

We did everything right over the phone and over the internet and it took about 2 hours...I had a TON of questions and my agent was so nice and friendly. Didn't make me feel like I was asking stupid questions at all.

Good luck. It is terrifying, to say the least. Darned if you do, darned if you don't.

Health Insurance Costs!!!! - typetypetypeaway

I was laid off April 2010 but could not get Cobra because the company I worked for did not have 2 people on payroll before the lay off. I initially had Horizon Blue Cross/Blue Shield. So I had to go on my own insurance with my husband and it is costing me thru the roof. I checked a few plans with other insurance companies, and they were actually more. I had to take individual insurance, and it was $1260 a month for two of us (but he is over 60 and I am nearing 60). After 1 year my rate went up to $1318, and I had to downgrade my insurance because the other would have cost $150 more a month. It is just terrible. We both have health issues too. So take the time to check it all out. You may be better off with Cobra because you are already existing with that insurance company. Getting your own insurance may cost a lot more and with your health problems, they are preexisting. If I was able to take the Cobra from my job, I would have jumped at the chance. The other thing is every state is different with regards to insurance. I live in NJ and it is terrible for insurance rates. I wish you luck.

I was in the same situation so I went to ehealthinsurance.com. They will give you quotes from several local companies. We got the best rate through them. We were only paying $250 for a family of 3 a month. The deductible was high but they had a $25 office copay and that is what we needed most, just to pay $25 when we went to the doctor, which was rarely and it did have a prescription plan where we paid $10 for generics (sometimes it was cheaper to use the $4 plan at Walmart and in that case we wouldnt even use our insurance)

SE Health Insurance - me

I am in IL and left my FT job a year ago (where employer paid 95% of my health ins) to do transcription FT. Ugh. I tried ehealthinsurance.com and was denied by 3 companies due to preexisting conditions. BCBS would take me but with riders on the plan (meaning they will not cover anything related to your preexisting conditions). I ended up taking the COBRA. Since COBRA only lasts for 18 months, I recently talked to an agent who applied on my behalf again. It's not great, but I was able to get on with Aetna - no riders, but for individual coverage I am paying $324/mo and it has a whopping $3000 deductible. Everybody's situation is different and I found that it's worth finding a good agent. Talk to anyone in you know who has or can recommend an agent in your area. I had one agent tell me I should just have back surgery while I was still had COBRA to "get it out of the way!" Good luck!

I saw on Huckabee this Christian Coop for health insurance (chministries.org). It is VERY reasonable and they pay up to $125,000 for each illness, VERY low premiums, Bronze $45/month, $5000 deductible; Silver $85/month, $1000 deductible; Gold $150/month, $500 deductible. ONLY the Gold level covers doctors. The other hitch is NO pre-existing conditions, so if you are healthy and church-goer, this is EXCELLENT. Only have to prove church going if you are ill, as apparently your minister has to sign a "minister" form. You are covered immediately, date you apply on line or date of mailed application. They send info immediately in the mail or apply right on line. The charges are PER PERSON covered. So for single person quoted above. I haven't decided yet as currently not attending church. Good luck. Hope this helps. There are other Christian health insurance coops also if you Google.

Just wanted to add addendum. They DO cover preexisting conditions, but in limited amounts 1 yr, 2 yr, and 3 yr after joining.

Medquist Health Insurance Info?
Jun 28, 2010

Can anyone tell me about MedQuist's health insurance (for just me - I live in North Carolina)?  I am afraid there is a hysterectomy in my future and I am really wondering how high the deductibles are and how much they pay after you've met them.  I'd be eligible in August, I think.  So, someone ease my mind that it's better than the private policy I have right now where I pay $230 a month for a $3, 500 deductible with $3, 500 coinsurance and they pay 50% of sur ...

It isn't easy to get off some of the spam and phone call lists when you click for more information about some of these courses.
