Working PRN for hospital? See msg. - boosa

Posted: May 12, 2011

Been doing this at home for 15+ years and going for a job interview to work p.r.n. for a local hospital.  Not sure of the details as of yet but if anyone out there has any input from their own experience on what exactly being an in-house p.r.n. transcriptionist is all about, please share.  Pros, cons, how the scheduling works, etc.  Thanks!  :)

not sure if this will help or not . . - but this is my 2 cents . .

I did what you did to get back into the "work force" so to speak. Basically what I did was be the backup for lack of a better term. I covered overflow, sick days, vacation days, etc., etc., The only "set days" I had was when I filled in for vacations. For the sick days/overflow, we adjusted accordingly. I was fortunate to have a very workable hospital liasion in the MT department. That will be half the battle. You have someone workable, it should be a breeze. It was for me. Wish you the best of luck!!!!

I have been a prn hospital transcriptionist a couple of times while I had another job. I didn't get a lot of hours and didn't have a set schedule. I generally worked to help with backlogs or when someone was sick. The good part was that I wanted to work there and it did not take long before I was hired full-time. Good luck on your interview.

I worked prn in Radiology for two hospitals for three years and then went full-time with them. I had every Sunday and anytime during the other days when someone was out.

I started for a hospital as a prn.....sm - Tiny

My experience with prn transcriptionists is that the hospital is feeling out adding positions, but don't want to commit, so they use prn's until the prn's pretty much turn into either part time or full time employees. I liked being prn, the hours were flexible, which I needed at the time, plus it opened the door eventually to a good position with the hospital. However, I worked for one hospital that called ALL of their transcriptionists prn's and they expected pretty much a full time work week. They did offer health benefits, which was nice, but no PTO. Even though you are prn doesn't mean you won't have to work a set schedule. It seems like a term they use to not have to give benefits, but still have a butt in the seat.

Working For A Hospital
Feb 23, 2011

Does anybody out there work at home for a hospital, not a transcription company.  How do they handle the running out of work situation - do they expect you to use your PTO or take it without pay.  Are they more flexible with scheduling - I was hoping for some place that might say you have to work 8 hours a day anytime between say 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.  Do they still pay by the line, and less for speech recognition? ...

Those Working In Hospital What Is The Minimal Amount Of Minutes Required
Jan 27, 2010

I started this job back in April, when this hospital decided to bring its transcriptionists back in-house.  Small 200 bed hospital and they hired another person and myself.  We both have 30 years experience, but she is more so clinic specialty (ophthalmology) and myself all acute-care with 10 of those years working for MTSO.  There is no set minimum of lines nor minutes; however, the work is very much backlogged and now they are looking closer at our production as it relates to mi ...

Hospital Job?
May 14, 2011

Just curious if anyone has a remote (long-distance) position with a hospital.  If so, did you have to work inhouse initially before being able to go home or not? My last employer (the current one MTSO I work for stinks so bad I don't even consider them an employer!) was a hospital that was part of a chain.  Of 50 MTs, there was one in Canada, one in Mexico, and one in China.  However, I'm fairy certain that they were Americans who lived locally and then subsequently mov ...

Hospital Pay--is This A JOKE?
Dec 30, 2009

Okay, so halfway out of curiosity, I applied to my local hospital, which is a large regional hospital, for an MT job.  They wanted a "seasoned" MT with CMT, who transcribes 250 lines an hour.  Okay, I thought, they might actually compensate better than I think since they have well-defined high standards.  WRONG!  They are offering $11.35 AN HOUR!  What a slap in the face!  You get a whole extra dollar if you work 2nd shift.  What an insult--they just have ...

Home Vs Hospital
Nov 01, 2010

Was laid off in April.  Have a couple offers from transcription companies, and one from a clinic which is part of a huge school/hospital system in our area, (which actually is through a temp agency).  There are only 2 full-time NP's and a handlful of part-time NP's.  The hospital job is a 45-minute drive, 1-way, in light traffic.  Pay to start is $13, but if this temp goes to permanent, potential is much greater.  The clinic is open M-F, 8-4, closed holidays.&n ...
