When applying for a new MT job... - sm

Posted: Dec 27, 2013

...and taking a transcription test, is it wise to type verbatim even if there are errors or try to clean it up? I'm an older MT and haven't applied in a while. I'd just like to know an opinion out there. I'd hate to not get a job because I "cleaned" something up when I should not have done so. TIA.

Hope this helps - anon

If there is a blatant error, i.e., they say respirations and then dictate blood pressure, I put an asterixis and a note down at the end of the page. I am testing a lot too, and I have discovered a lot of the companies are trying to determine if one can follow directions. I took a test the other day. On the SR part, I typed it in word and then copied and pasted it onto the test. They knew. I failed that test. Good luck to you. If they don't specify verbatim, I try to clean it up.

SR on test? - sm

Gosh, I didn't know any companies were putting SR on tests. Makes sense, I guess, but I sure haven't come across it in any tests I've taken. Is this pretty common?

Yes, it was for one of the "big" ones. There was straight transcription, but there were a few that had the text there and you were instructed to make edits where necessary. There were hand controls for foot pedal,F keys. I put it in Express scribe and typed it in word. Guess it was easy to tell.
Oh, I see now. - sm

Gosh, I'm very sorry that happened to you. And I thank you for the heads-up. So does this mean they won't hire you? Well, it's THEIR loss.

Not really. I didn't exactly follow the instructions. Back in the day, you could just do your transcription and they would be calling you immediately. Nowadays, there are so many in the field, they can be very picky.

Thank you everyone. Even though I've been an MT for a loooong time, I'm about to go into unchartered waters.
I did that too, typed in Word and pasted it in. - For testing with both Nuance and MModal.

I passed though, so I wonder why? I did not have a foot pedal or Instant Text, only Word and Autocorrect.

So for both tests (Nuance and MModal): I downloaded the file, played it in my favorite audio player, typed it in Word with my autocorrects, and pasted the finished product into the text box on the test webpage, replacing all the original text.

I think I did paste the SR output into Word as a starting point and worked around it, though.

How long ago did you test with those 2? I just tested last week with one company, which I have already passed 3 tests over the years. When it came to the SR part, I just created my own document in word and used my foot pedal, did not try to edit with F keys.
One year ago... Pretty sure I used the same method - to take the test as you. (sm)

I don't remember any F keys, but I did not pay any attention to their instructions on how to play the files back, because I knew I was just going to download the audio file, play it in my own software, and type it up in Word. I didn̢۪t have a foot pedal so used my own software (called "Transcribe!") to play the audio back (I had set up my own keyboard shortcuts for play/pause on that software).

I only tested with MModal and Nuance, no other companies, like I said, a year ago. I just don't remember any special instructions on how we had to edit the SR files on the test, only remember two components: 1) the audio file, and 2)the text output box. Maybe they have since changed how they do the test?

I treat it just like I would a report - sm

Which means blanks where they are needed, etc. I look up doctor's names if I can localize the dictation, but I don't fool around with those fake names and MR numbers.

Applying For Job
Jan 10, 2011

Okay, this is somewhat of a strange situation.  I have been looking for a job in the field that I was in prior to becoming an MT 11 years ago, which would be a full-time position with benefits.  Currently I am IC.  I had lost my previous job due to downsizing and the office/company that I worked for basically closed it's Wisconsin branch except for a handful of employees.  I just found out that one of the employees at this small Wisconsin branch of the company that I use ...

I am considering applying to Diskriter.  I just received an email with some questions.  I am wanting to know any info on the criminal background check.  I had some hot checks about 7-10 years ago and paid them off then, but am worried about this background check and also my credit is not that great.  Could someone please clue me in?  Also, do you need to take a picture of your desk/work area to work there?  I have a alcove in my bedroom where I do my work since I live in an apartment.  I ...

MME's... Is It Worth Applying For?

Done Applying For MT Jobs
Apr 10, 2012

I need to write this for my own sake. I can no longer apply or test for these company positions. I am being rejected in one way or another by all of them. I have done this for going on 30 years. I can't take it anymore. It is so very very painful to deal with this. I think in my heart I have given up finding any MT position or any job at this point in my life. All I do is get angry, cry, throw things. Very very depressed and I get from friends is either God has something special for ...

Does anyone ever simply e-mail a resume to a company rather than completing the long, drawn out application they want filled out when you click the link to apply?  I have 30 years of experience and do not want to spend time filling in information about every job I have ever had and why I left, where I went to school, emergency contacts, etc on their application, only to never hear from the company and would prefer just to e-mail a resume with a cover letter.  Does anyone ever do this? ...

Be Very Careful When Applying To SoftScript
Dec 05, 2009

Be very careful when applying to SoftScript.  They have many openings but I have applied, when through the testing, got an interview, but they never called and when trying to find answers they never respond.  I would be very skeptical of working for a company like this.  I also checked a little into them and found out that I was not the first one that this has happened to, plus getting work can be a problem and keeping work can be a problem.  ...
