VR rate versus straight typing - te

Posted: Apr 16, 2014

I really wish I understood the logic behind paying 4 cpl for VR as opposed to 8 for straight typing.  Do these people think it takes us exactly half the time?  I understand being paid a little less, but it should be around 6 cpl.  We still have to listen to the dictation, which takes the same time.  What about the providers we basically have to type the whole report for?  Yet we get the 4 cpl because it's VR.  So unfair.  Did they do some type of study that showed VR takes exactly half the time?  I can defnitely get more VR done, but it's not equal to twice the amount of lines I do straight typing.  Hate to leave this career after so many years, but pretty much am being forced to like so many others.

So long as they have applicants for these grossly underpaid positions, they will keep seeing how low they can go. When are people going to say enough is enough and just walk away? "They" are betting that we aren't...and so far they are right.

For the first 2 years I did VR, I was paid the same rate at straight typing...then, we got a call and were told we were being cut because they need to stay competitive and reduce costs for the providers...

Does anyone believe they charge the client less for VR versus straight type? I don't. The client gets a complete document regardless of how it was completed.

I believe they pay us less, but charge the same for both VR and straight...

I think we should get paid more for VR. It is more work fixing the report than typing it, at least the system I have to put up with. VR will only work if the physicians are trained, state their headings, paragraphs, everything. As we know, training does not happen. You are right, a correct document is expected regardless of whether it is VR or typed. I absolutely despise it, have from day 1 and will until the day I retire. I feel it was misrepresented by the companies that sold it and no one wanted to listen to the individual that was actually doing the work (us) but only looked at the end result of the report, how good it looked and golly look at the money we saved!!

So true. I know I can't make a living on VR, so I don't know how anyone can, unless you happen to be one of the lucky ones that gets a good account and good dictators. It seems like the ESLs are getting worse, if that's possible, and the companies are raising their quality standards, so not very motivated as an editor (can't call us MTs anymore) to work so hard at these rates. For those of us that were fast typists, going from about $18 per hour to $9 per hour is degrading! :(

They had to pay for those systems and how they did it was to cut line rates.

I make less on VR than straight transcription.

And to the other poster.....The reason why it's getting crappier is because anything good runs through voice and the crap is spit out for editing. Now you don't think they'd allow you to edit good stuff now do you?

Client does not know how the work is completed, hence - OldsterMT

I would make a bet that the client is still being charged the same rate no matter how the work is being produced. The company would therefore gain the profit on the difference they are paying the MTs versus the editors or use the money to invest in these gosh awful speech systems.

It's all about making money. It is most definitely not about how their employees or ICs can make a living wage.

I'm so tired of the stress, I'm "leaving on the next train."

Yes, best job I had paid 6 for VR (8 for straight). - ANON

and a differential of a penny a line extra on weekends (so 7 and 9).

The package my hospital purchased is so bad - we are paid the same

I do not spend any less time doing VR work.

ASR Versus Straight Typing

Does anyone else out there get scared when you get a straight typing report?   Every time I get a straight typed report, the dictator sucks, sound quality sucks, or both.  I am totally scared every time a blank screen pops up.  Don't mean to sound unappreciative of the increased income, but sometimes I feel like I am being pulled through a needle backwards! ...

Re Straight Typing Versus VR.
Mar 08, 2012

I have a pretty good and accurate typing speed, which has made me pretty good money in the past.  Then along comes VR.  I have had somewhat success with it, if the right dictation is placed on it.  The problem comes in when a company tries to put anything and everything on VR that does not belong there.  It defeats the purpose of using it in the first place. I am told that the computer calculates the accuracy of a report.  If it is 80% or more, it goes on VR.  ...

ASR Vs Straight Typing
Oct 15, 2010

Got new accounts for the last 2 weeks that are not ASR (yet) so have been doing about 90% straight typing.  I have been averaging about $20 more per day than when I do ASR.  They can sell whatever snake oil they want, I can type faster and make more money straight typing than I can with their much-touted fabulous ASR --- EVEN ON BRAND NEW UNFAMILIAR ACCOUNTS.  ...

Why Suddenly Less ASR, More Straight Typing?
Nov 19, 2009

Hmm, let's see.  We get a letter from MQ extolling our virtues as MTs, more and more info about nationalizing the EMR with Verizon, etc. and I notice I'm not the only one getting less ASR, more direct typing.  Could be a coincidence, but could be MQ is gathering statistics on us, how the voice recognition program of MQ compares with our production as MTs versus straight typing on our own.  Could MQ be using us as guinea pigs right now to pad their statistics to prove the ...

I used to love my job, being an at-home medical transcriptionist. I used to make around $20-25 an hour straight typing and thought being an at-home medical transcriptionist was the best job ever! I could get the kids off to school, work for a couple of hours, go shopping, work for a couple of hours, just so I made production requirements and everything was great!
