More fields being outsourced - s/m - mt

I was reading the Tampa Tribune last night. There was an article regarding outsourcing. It talked about x-rays and scans being sent to India and the Phillipines (which we all know happens), but the article said now insurance companies, instead of having nurses on staff to assist patients pre and post-op, as well as answering medical questions, will be using "overseas people" in, again, India and the Phillipines. Why you ask? Because they work for peanuts.

Personally, I'd rather talk to an AMERICAN about my AMERICAN HEALTH ISSUES. How is this even legal??????????

Why don't we just become the nation called ChiIndPhiMidEast ?

I can understand worrying about jobs going and competing, but - talking to one stranger versus

another? Why does it matter so much where they are? In that respect, I honestly don't care. The quality of communication does matter, whether the person's conscientious and helpful or an uncaring slacker or stonewaller, but that has nothing to do with where the other person's sitting.

Or to put it another way, all good people will be as close as you need them to be and the bad ones will never be far enough away. :)

She didn't say the Philippines or India weren't nice places. She didn't say she was worried whether her voice would carry over the additional distance. She didn't say that someone in another country might not be a delightful person who's never personally set fire to an orphanage.

The point she's making is the erosion of jobs for American workers by off-shoring. And by the way, this practice not only costs us jobs, it also leads to lower pay for the comparable jobs that ARE retained in the US.

I think most of US can attest to that, right?

The people who get on here and defend sending jobs overseas blow my mind.

I explained I have different criteria is all. If it comes down to it, and occasionally it does, for me good character and work ethic trump considerations such as hobbies, sex, favorite books, number of pets, age, and any number of other factors irrelevant to my particular billing issue or appointment date, including where the other bottom's parked while we talk.

I wouldn't try to lay that guilt trip on us. There is nothing all that inappropriate or mean about wanting to keep our jobs here in our country, so we can feed and clothe our families. When America prospers, we have money left over to lend (give) to other countries who are unable to feed and clothe themselves. Right now all we can do is try to survive, because our politicians have given away our inheritance by overseas outsourcing of our livelihood and our national inheritance, JOBS!

My sister-in-law just lost her job for an insurance company (she is an RN) for exactly that reason, for Blue Cross. She has applied other places and no luck, sounds like the same story. So she is trying to return to home health and one of the services has a bunch of foreign nurses here on special visas working under the guise that they say they can't get enough US nurses. So she has been unemployed now and looking for about 4 months, and she is looking and applying everywhere with no luck!

Bartending sounds good because we will all be out of work alcoholics when all of our jobs are overseas. The trick of course is how they will pay for it, as we will have no jobs.

I honestly cannot think of a "safe" field.

Women are still considered chattle in India, no matter their degree of education. Diseases which were rendered nearly non-existent in the U.S. for almost a century, run rampant in filthy conditions in Indian urban areas.

They work for pennies, and work ethic means nothing.

No thanks. I'd rather be jobless in the U.S., with U.S. citizen clinicians on firm footing on U.S. soil, treating whatever the heck I'm in the hospital for.

Change is also rampant in India, which is developing like - like a bullet train. Time for another glance. NM

I have a few questions for anyone who is in fact an employee of M-Modal. My current employer just informed us that we were being outsourced to M-Modal. We, being 12-13 MTs, are really freaking out. Forgive me if this topic has been covered and/or beat to death, but were most of you aware that not only does Nuance outsource some/a good portion of the work to India, but that Nuance India actually outsources their work to other companies? It is one thing that they're sending it oversees in the first place, but then once it goes to another company, and potentially another one after that if they're anything like US companies... So I've been a transcriptionist for 15 years, the last 8 years I've been self-employed, contracted to a local hospital (recently bought out by a bigger hospital), and several family practices and nursing homes. The hospital decided to oursource transcription to M*Modal, with each of us getting an "offer" from M*Modal (thus preventing the employed transcriptionists from being able to draw unemployment, nice).
