MT Schools Promising Big Bucks - smalls

Posted: Feb 25, 2012

First, don't get me wrong; I'm not trying to be negative about this in any way and wish any new MT success.

However, with this profession dying like it is and even very experienced MTs just trying to eke out even $10 an hour . . . It really aggravates me all of these MT schools and courses trying to suck innocent people in with their high tuition costs, etc. The fact is that nowadays it is akin to going and paying x amount of money to go work for $10 or less an hour. These schools/courses make it sound as if you will be guaranteed to make $30,000 a year or more. These days? Yeah, right. Especially if you are new. It really saddens me to see this profession literally go down the tubes before my very eyes.

Sorry you're having a tough time - Hang In There!

That way, they made no guarantee. I totally do not recommend this career to anyone anymore.

With so many companies coming back to the US lately sm - US MT

I hope MT will be one of them. ABC News recently did a story on companies packing up in China and moving back to the US. They said even the foreigners you get when you call a customer service (like Dell), is next to move their work back here to create jobs. It'd sure be nice to see that happen in our field.

Even if it comes back, it'll never be the same. The $$ will - go in the bigwigs pockets not ours .. sm

Oh, there might be more work. But .. facilities are now used to the low rates and aren't likely to agree to them going back up. AND .. even if they do, our CEOs will just make 2 million instead of 1.

Afraid to say it - it reallly IS time to move on. I feel like an old 8-track tape that has been played too many times and thrown out with the garbage.
Yep, and . . . - Smalls

...even if they do bring it back to the U.S. (which would be great), I really don't think it would get much better because of so many factors, including voice recognition EMR, MTSO companies overhiring, etc., to name a few in addition to what you just said . . . medical providers are used to the low rates. My yearly earnings for 2011 were less than I made 12+ years ago in-house at a 40-hour per week job as a beginner (and I wasn't paid as much then as most transcriptionists). Sad. Of course, it's not just transcription. It's just a really sad economy.
Besides, being a newbie on production pay means - TREMENDOUS losses for the first years. SM
[ In Reply To ..]
Losses being the difference between what you would have earned working at something else and what you did earn at MT. Assuming some work experience and the alternative option of a modest working-class job at about $30K, most people are looking at a good $20K loss the first year. Less the second year, maybe only $10,000, but it's important for newbies to realize that in the third year you're STILL learning, every new dictator slowing you back down, still developing the skill that will allow you to make that modest $30K at home. Many if not most are still not making what they would be in that other job.

PLUS, all of us suffer significant losses when our accounts or jobs are changed, but it's much worse for those whose skills are still being developed.

PLUS, there are no raises or little steps up to a better paying position for remote MTs, the sort of opportunities that're common in most other lines of work.

So plan to keep subtracting what you would have made for years. I don't think a price of $50K is overstating the real loss many people are looking at under these current conditions before they get to join the rest of us in wondering if they'll be training for something else next year anyway.

For people who need the income, this is a disastrous choice economically that may take a decade or more to recover from--probably in another line of work altogether. It actually makes me feel a little sick to think of earnest hardworking people writing checks to MT schools.

Oh, I forgot to include THAT little PLUS in the lost-income list: Of course, subtract all costs of schooling and lost income while in school.

From your lips to God's ears. I think some of that has to do with continued dissatisfaction with having to deal with foreigners for every aspect of customer service, which you never get (most of time they are reading cue cards, throw them a curve ball question and you upset their whole mindset). I personally dropped several companies that employed that practice, and wrote to each and every one specifically telling them why. I will happily pay a little more for local customer service and products, get someone that speaks English, keep them in a job, and can help me immediately resolve an issue. These companies sent all kinds of incentives, discounts, feebies; told them all, when they employ American workers, this American would support their bottom line; otherwise, no go. First one that actually got it was my cable company. Pulled all their customer service from Mexico several months ago due to endless complaints and customers switching. Their repeat calls dropped significantly and their income increased dramatically. Proves they can do it.
True, but that's a different industry. - MT

Those types of companies are getting direct feedback from customers who have to deal directly with those CSRs. The language barrier makes communication difficult if not impossible.

The difference is that in MT the "customers" (physicians, hospitals, clinics, etc.) have contributed to the push to send the work overseas. It's all about MONEY, and NOBODY cares about the quality of the reports.

It's far too late to educate the general public about obtaining copies of their medical records, checking them for accuracy; familiarizing themselves with their diagnoses, meds, treatments, etc.; and keeping a copy on hand in case of emergency. That is what AAMT/AHDI WOULD and SHOULD have done *IF* they were advocates of MTs.

Thanks for your post. I'm curious -- who is your cable company?

Sorry...was not ignoring your post, just missed it. I currently have DirecTV as my cable. I was told by someone working there, they got a new CEO about 1-1/2 years ago. They had been using Mexico as their call center. There were so many complaints and excessive wait times on 1-800 numbers (which company bears sole financial responsbility for), that the new guy was appalled. Their customer service was so bad at that time, you could easily wait 45 minutes and never get the answer to your question addressed properly. The OS reps could be heard making fun of the callers, would lay the phone down and wait for you to hang up, they would insult you directly...it was pretty bad. I had to call them last week for some clarification on my bill, got Americans each time and had my question answered in less than 10 minutes total (had to talk to 2 different depts. because of 2 separate issues). Hope this helps. Service is much, much better; so, it appears that CEO did exactly what he said he was going to do. Hope this helps :)

M*Modal Promising Me Big $$! They Need To Stop! LOL!
Apr 08, 2014

Okay, I'm about to get irritated with M*Modal.  Being laid off in Sept. due to M*Modal getting our accounts.  I think most of you have followed my story here lately so you know the scoop. Anyway, none of us are going to apply with MM, but MM will no take no for an answer!  They have asked us at least on 5 different occasions to test with them! Each time they say hurry, hurry so you can reserve your spot!  I cannot help but think of graveyard plot when they say that. ...

Just Curious, Which Kind Of TATs Are The MTSOs Promising
Feb 07, 2010

I remember in the late 90s, an op report at my company was 12 hours, a discharge summary was 48 hours.  I think H&Ps were even 8-12 hours; if there was one that was truly stat the hospital would call and it would be done sooner.  We were told the TATs and we watched out for them as a team (back when "team" really meant a respectful working relationship between the MTSO and the company).   ...

Licensed Schools
Aug 10, 2012

I learned from someone who found out the hard way that it's important to make sure whatever school you go to is licensed by their state. The information is supposed to be displayed on their website and any other catalogs or ads. If not, there may be a problem. The school in question would tell everyone their state didn't require a license. It turned out that the school kept moving not only from state to state, but from country to country and the state they had been living in did requir ...
