Just took a typing test and did bad on one section... - who cares

Posted: Jan 20, 2011

I so badly needed to slow the dictation down but was not able to. I listened to two places a million times and just could not make out what the heck he was saying. Had to leave 2 blanks. That is going to look absolutely horrible.  Rrrrrg, so disappointed.

Don't worry about it, I left a blank in a test - ncMT

When I tested for a job I left a blank and still got the job. So don't worry that much, they may have done that on purpose to see what you would do. Keeping fingers crossed for you!

In addition to seeing how you handle their ESL dictators, they should also select a report with a clear speaker but with one who uses more difficult words or terms in the text. I have especially found that with some neurology or pain management physicians many consider them to be difficult but I rather enjoy it.

I don't think all of these tests should simply involve deciphering plain English language that can not be spoken properly, but a true test of the MT's knowledge and skill would also be fair.

The test is a TEST. This is something that's going to happen on the job. They want to see how you handle it. On one test I took, there had been a dictator with problems anyone would encounter, and I just added to the cover letter when I returned the test that, were I ever to get such a dictator, I knew they would supply prior work samples so I could hear him better. And I inserted the blanks very professionally.

It worked, too. I was hired.
Person of Interest - What a great idea!!!! And good for you. - NM

Anyone Taken A Typing Test For Other Than MT Work?
Jun 30, 2010

Well, I finally got an interview for a job...not totally thrilled as it's with a temp agency but it is an "open to permanent" position as a medical administrative assistance.  I'm worried about taking the typing test!  With all my shorthands, I have them ingrained in my brain and I'm afraid I'll flub up and want to make shortcuts when I need to be worried about my timing on the test.  Has anyone taken a test for something other than an MT position and did oka ...

Typing Speed Test - Sm
Mar 17, 2012

I need some help/opinions.  I think I transcribe fairly fast, i.e., lines per hour.  I have been looking to get out of MT and into something related and have been given a typing test (in person) on a couple of occasions.  The problem is that I stink at typing from written copy as opposed to from hearing it via dictation.  My brain just isn't wired to pass these tests :( ...
