Is it appropriate to ask about benefits before you apply for a job posting? - NCMT

Posted: Jun 16, 2011

I sent an email to the recruiter for Keystrokes asking that very question, but never got a response.

I don't think its crazy to want to know about their benefits, or the pay, before you even bother to go through the whole process of applying and testing.  Am I wrong?

Set me straight folks!  Thanks!

also unlikely that you'll get an answer. It seems rare these days as I look at job ads for employers in most fields to give out benefit info until you've applied.

I think its wrong too -- would save applicant and employer from wasted time -- but seems to be the trend to not give out that info until the interview or even after hiring.

Would be nice to get salary info before deciding to apply too - but even that seems hard to get sometimes!

I feel like I have sent my resume out and filled out the online application and tested at least 7-10 tests. I had a company email me yesterday saying they liked my resume and qualifications and wanted me to test. I figure enough is enough. I sent them an email asking exactly what type of account they were hiring for (VR% vs straight typing%, ESL% for the specific account, and the pay rate for that account). Also told them the hours I was willing to work. No response yet, but I won't test again until I see it is worth my time to do so. I personally don't see anything wrong with asking for these things.

Applying online for these services is a crapshoot. Never knowing what you're getting yourself into until you've gotten yourself into it. Don't even know what account you'll be transcribing. No sampling of the audio or dictation or platform before hiring. No way of gauging your earning potential. The uncertainty. The oppression. Eventually, switching from one MTSO to another will be like switching from one cell-phone carrier to another. Just a handful of major players after EMR becomes "the way it is" within the next four years and beyond, in my hypothesis that is.

I wish you good tidings re the interviews.

Recent posts discuss the benefits issue, which sounds like a "caught between a rock and a hard place" situation. This information would be sufficient for me to avert my eyes elsewhere. Re compensation, an ad minus the rate is bypassed.

I, like the other posters, have tested for many companies this last year. A couple of these tests took up to 6 hours. I do ask what type of insurance the company offers. My time is valuable. I don't think they are concerned about that. I don't need the specifics of insurance, just what type they offer. I recently applied for a job where they offered benefits. When they called me they said the benefits they offer are paid holidays. That seems like a fraud. If a recruiter won't at least tell me what type their company offers, I won't test. What could possible be secretive about that. Some companies even allow you to look at the plan!

I think most of em are secretive about it because - they know theyre gypping us. n/m

Traditional etiquette says you do not ask about benefits until an offer is on the table.

I sent my resume to a company where I know another person who works there and told me she liked her job. After they received my resume they liked what they saw obviously and asked me to test. They told me in an email what the system requirements were and also what the salary is for VR and straight typing (so as to not waste my time and their time). I liked it and so I took the test (about 3 hours) and passed. They offered me the job through a phone interview. This all took place within 3-4 days of me sending my resume and testing. I am glad they were forthcoming with that info, as maybe I would not have tested. I don't want to give out the name of the company but they told me they are hiring. If interested, shoot me an email.

FYI - Those Who Might Apply With Teletrak
Jan 16, 2011

Just want to be sure my fellow MTs are well informed.  If you apply at Teletrak, be prepared to be offered 8 cpl for 65 VBC line - this amounts to approximately 30% reduction in pay with the negative spaces.  I used several old reports and figured line counts all ways and it was almost 30% less each time with VBC.  I was told by the recruiter, "You'll probably have to work a few extra hours a day to make what you're used to, but in order to keep the client in a long-term ...
