I think MT should be patterned similar to the music industry. - sm - Meerkat

Or the film industry.  Whenever their work is replayed somewhere, they get residual checks.

Now that there is an EMR just about everywhere, when someone in the hospital pulls up a report to read, you KNOW that is tracked within the computer system for security/HIPAA purposes.  Everything about that report is traceable to the MT who typed it.

When the doctor reads our report, and later treats the pt. based on what he/she read, the hospital gets paid for that.  When a patient requests copies of their reports, the hospital charges up the whazoo for that service.  When copies of a pt's record go to court, the hospital gets paid for that.  When the lawyers, and the jury read those medical reports, a decision is frequently based on details in those reports.  The lawyers get paid.  Even the JURY gets paid!  Do WE?  NO!!!!

Not only should we be making far more per line when we type these medical (& legal) documents, but we should be seeing residuals each time that document is pulled up and read by anyone.

Whatever. Royalties are paid for ownership. We - do not own the records we type.

The hospital gets paid for copies becaues they own the record, store it, print it out, mail it, and have to pay the personnel to do so. Everyone gets paid for their job. We get paid when we transcribe or edit.

Thanks for the laugh, though.

Eye Roll

I know a musician that gets a nice fat check every time - a recording with his trombone on it - sm

as a member of the band plays anywhere in the world. And no, he does not own the record, the label, or the music. Just the trombone.

You don't own the record, the originator would! This has to be one of the most ludicrous things I've read in ages!

Are you going to pay the person who milks the cow (or even better the cow) for every glass of milk your family drinks?

wow

Wow, it must be "MT Put-Down Week". The post - was tongue-in-cheek, not serious. (OP)

It was more of a wish than anything else. Lighten up, peeps.

That's what I thought when I read the replies to your post... - Kiki1

Lighten up! Jeesh.

That said, I do see where you're coming from, also. While I don't really think we should be paid every time our report is pulled up, I also don't think actors should get residuals, either. They are well paid in the first place. We aren't fairly paid in the first place. I'd just be happy to be fairly paid from from the start and be done with it.

The dictater would be the one with the royalties- MTs are just the records - no name

Jul 22, 2013

I have been in this business for 33 years.  I recently posted on the main board about having a physical disability and how MTSOs do not take this into consideration, regarding federal laws.  I recently had an eye exam and found out that the peripheral vision on my right side has deteriorated.  This was an eye exam done at Wal-Mart.  I had my last exam done there six years ago as well and at that time, the doctor asked me if I had ever had a stroke.  I told him that as fa ...

Ideas For Background Music Player

I started using Spotify this week after my trusty old radio quit on me.  I adjusted the volume to just the right level.  Working away and then AN ADVERTISEMENT COMES ON AT FULL VOLUME.  So now my ears are ringing and I need to find something that doesn't change volume when ads come on.  I don't mind the ads, I just don't want them blasting what is now left of my eardrums.  I have heard of Pandora, but not much else.  I have iHeartRADIO preinstalled on ...

Medical Reports Downloading Into Your Music Library For Ipod
Jun 17, 2013

I have a medical report from a hospital that downloaded into my music library for my Ipod.  Even if I check the box that I don't want it, it will still download again whenever the IPod is plugged back in.  Now granted some doctors have a really sexy voice (you know what I mean), but you still can't dance to it.  Does this happen to anyone else?  I know this has to be a HIPPA violation since the name of the patient, MRN and everything else is given at the beginn ...

As a group, we need to talk, fax, email our state representatives to explain what is going on in our industry. Give them your personal story.  We should all do this 3/1/2010 and the first of every month until something is done.  If they get enough complaints/responses, they will help us.  They will start and talk to each other and realize how many of us are being abused.  We need to have state and federal regulations to protect us from these companies. Due to&n ...

Industry Trends
Mar 21, 2010

I'm new to this board, but have been in the business a while.  There's obviously a lot of dissatisfaction on the way work is being moved to India and Speech Recognition.  Its affected me, too.  But, it is what it is.  The healthcare facilities  are being forced to cut costs, and the MTSOs have to respond to keep the business, which is unfortunate for us. First, there was India.  HealthScribe, Focus Informatics, CBay, Heartland and others pushed this ...

No Future In This Industry?
Jun 29, 2012

I don't know why I'm posting, just a last bit of hope left in me.  I have devoted my entire adult life to this industry, what I used to consider a career. Over the decades, I became a top-notch professional MT, basically 100% accuracy, never needed QA help, and was a huge producer.   Fast forward 20 years, and I climbed up the ladder in our industry, joining QA, being a team lead, then up into management levels, and.... rather than have my salary 'commensurate with ...

How Long Has It Been Since The MT Industry Started
Apr 18, 2012

I am fairly new to this. I have always worked as an MT, but always paid hourly. Obviously 4 cents per line is not enough for anyone to survive on unless you are doing it for supplemental income. Does Company Feedback Really Matter In This Industry?
Jun 22, 2011

I read in my textbooks that an MT should not be heard and that complaining about the way in which doctors and PAs, etc dictate is not relevant in this industry.  They don't want to hear it. It has always been my belief that it takes two to tango, especially if you want to produce anything of quality. I was recently pondering if it will do any good to tell this company what I believe I am seeing.  This is probably suicide but I don't like to take the blame for something I am n ...

I Have Realized The Truth Of The MT Industry Situation
Jun 06, 2015

I've been coming here for years. For many years it was only the poorly trained MTs who complained about not doing well. Anyone who had good training and good skills, sometimes learned on the job, which isn't practical now, but good skills at any rate, did well. The times have changed. While I used to categorize the complainers as neer-do-wells because they lacked ambition, accuracy, and training, that just isn't the case anymore. The employers have beat MTs down so that they can ...
