How do you get your dictation?

really? - are we being punked?

not the poster you were responding to, but believe it or not, there are many of us out here who have worked very successfully and been paid very handsomely for work performed NOT under the aegis of an MTSO. It's not unreasonable to ask how other MTs in other work styles receive their dictation - especially for those of us attempting to transition. Open your mind.

I wouldn't allow my 8-year-old to be as snotty as you and a couple of the other posters on this question. Did it ever occur to you bunch of crybabies who constantly whine about MT going down the drains that it might be the complete and utter lack of respect a lot of you have to your fellow co-workers has contributed to the demise of our profession? Anyway...I receive my dictations over the internet, but I did just see a car labeled "Medical Transcription Courier" today, so apparently some still have tapes delivered.

my 9 yo may not be as snotty but - reality check

is as equally as out of touch as the OP.

The whole point of being a medical transcriptionist is to be a professional. How does one act as a professional? Through research, although it appears the OP was playing hooky the day they taught "how to do your own research before opening your mouth" was taught in that school.

geez. Quit beating up the 8 and 9 year olds already, would ya?
To Research is To Ask. The OP asked. Not sure - if Opened Mouth. n/m

I get some via online dictation service I subscribe to (Idigital) and still have 2 clinics using tapes (one the old full size standard tapes!!!) that I pick up each day and deliver printed work to. I have several doctors who are very resistant to the EMR idea, and when they do eventually transition will be using transcription interface. Keep the faith, decent work is still out there!

where dictations come from, seriously - WWZD

[ In Reply To ..]
bb, you might refer to this general overview to get started:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_transcription

Skype is not secure and is real-time, therefore neither acceptable nor practical as a means of transmitting dictations. YouTube, also not secure, is not acceptable.

Dictations may be physically spoken into a tape recorder and the tape given to a transcriptionist to play and type out. There can be many variations of this.

Modern dictations are recorded onto a server by telephone and accessed using some specific program via the internet. The internet affords security by encryption, password controls, etc. If you are at a hospital or clinic, and you see a healthcare professional talking on the phone but not letting the other person respond, she's probably dictating to the server.

Those of us using the internet to access dictations will sign on, download the dictation and listen to it. We either type out the dictation or we edit a file generated by a voice recognition program based on the dictation. Using the same program we upload the finished document for the customer's use. Again, there can be variations to this.

Hope this answers your question. Feel free to e-mail me directly. I'm sure others will clarify/add to the info I've provided here.

As an aside, lately the dictations I receive come from the Land of Mushmouths, where they have long vowel movements.

oh my, transcription 101. lol - anon NM

Thanks WWDZ for answering BB's question of where do dictations come from. That was kind and professional. She asked a simple question and those "others" might have laughed, but come on folks, shame on you. This person may have worked in a back office with tapes for years and not be involved with researching things on the computer like the rest of us doing outsourced, at-home type work and using the computer for everything. So, it was a realistic question to me as I have been doing this for 32 years and that is how it all began.

thanks! - WWZD

Anyone who thinks my answer did all the research hasn't seen that Wikipedia entry; it goes on for pages & pages. I just barely scratched the surface and at any rate, I answered a specific question.

I remember well the days of the old Dictaphone tapes, from the time before computers even, when the IBM Selectric was cutting edge (the one where you could type out a line & see it on the little screen before you pressed return). Ah, when Word was just a white cursor on a blue background...

To me it is the greatest irony that all those ancient keyboard commands burned into my memory are what make my LPH as good as it is today!

If that was the case, then the OP - xx

should have said so.

The original question was not presented professionally at all. The question invited ridicule got the responses it deserved.
