Does anyone's employer use Epic systems? - good or bad?

Does anyone's employer use Epic systems?  Our hospital is thinking of switching.

Then kiss your job goodbye. - anon

Epic has taken over everything. Transcriptionist is no longer needed. Good luck to you.

What is EPIC? - Is it an EMR program

I trained full-time for a month in a local hospital for part-time work ... was able to do that for about 3 weeks before EPIC came on board, which had been planned for over a year, apparently. Within 2 days of the startup we went from having thousands of jobs to under 500 and by the end of that week all 15 transcriptionsts (working from home) were put on 3-4 hour rotations in order for them to have ANY work at ALL. I was resource so was given no opportunity to work at all and I gave my notice 2 months later. They wouldn't even allow me to do a couple reports a day just to "keep my fingers in the pie" and also to not lose the skills I had learned about their transcription system.

My full-time job is for a hospital using Meditech. While it's not a "transcriptionist friendly" software, I'm SOOOO happy it isn't EPIC. A lot of transcriptionists are wondering "is there life after EPIC?" ... keep us posted!

I was a full-time on-site MT working in Epic. We had plenty of work although our volume was probably cut in half. My facility just laid all of us off, however, and sent the work to a company that offshores. Epic did open up some other opportunities for us, though, and I was able to transfer to another department doing something not related to MT. So to answer your question, there is life after Epic, but not in transcription.

Could you explain how your volume was cut in half due to Epic? Offshoring is not an option in my department, they can't even farm it out local and our med/surg is already outsourced. If you can share, what other kinds of jobs opened up for you.

Our volume was cut in half because many of the reports could be templated. We lost operative reports altogether. Many of the providers use point and click and only need to dictate portions of a report instead of the entire thing. Some of them use Dragon and do their own editing. Now, all the dictation is done in Dragon and coverted from text to speech. They found a company with software compatible with ours as we never had the capability to do editing. Don't be so sure your work can't be offshored or outsourced. We never thought it could happen to us and it did. Now, there are abstracting and data migration jobs as well as jobs in record review, analysis and clinical documentation. I have a coding background so the transition was easy for me, I abstract and do record review. Someone asked what state I lived in; that's really a moot point as Epic is Epic anywhere you go. If your facility is converting, I would recommend finding work outside of MT or even a different temp job so you are not taken by surprise.

Thank you! - Curious

Thank you everyone for answering. I'm sorry to hear it cost jobs. Those of you whose facilities were/are involved with Epic, can you tell me what state you are in? I'm IL.

Epic Is Being Installed In My Hospital/employer

They're starting in Ambulatory care this summer, getting it up and running and anticipate 2 years later the whole hospital will have it up and running. I pretty much anticipate a complete loss of employment.  Can anyone else who had Epic come in tell me what happened and how soon after ?  I'm just tired of being bought out everywhere by MedQuist, twice now I've run from them, but this time when the rug is pulled out from under me, i just want to be prepared. ...

Tell The Potential 2nd Employer About The 1st?
Sep 20, 2011

Took me quite awhile to figure this out. You need 2 MT jobs because they all overhire to keep many more employees less busy to pay less. In my day, you kept your 2nd job quiet, but what is the way to do it now? Is it good or bad to be looking for a 2nd part-time job, do you tell them. Is there anyone who left the first job to go full time with the 2nd one or switched them? And is it better to go IC in the 2nd job because of flexibility? I sound pretty dumb! ...

Contacting Former Employer
Jul 09, 2012

Has anyone ever contacted a former employer to see if they would re-hire you? Reason I am asking is, I was working with this MT company, but had to quit because something happened to my computer and my back-up didn't have the specifications required to run the software they use. It's been about 4 months since I've quit, and I have a new computer now that would work with what they offer. I am hesitant to ask to see if they would consider re-hiring me because when I quit, even thoug ...

Dear Prospective Employer, It would have been great if you had specified in your ad whether the opening was on-site or if it was available to telecommuters.  If it is not available to telecommuters, then I just wasted over an hour of my time and your HR department has a unqualified application to process. It would have been great if your HR department had done a trial run through your online application to get the bugs out of it.  It would have been great if you had not designe ...

This story has been popping up in the news lately, and I find it very distressing!  How low will a company stoop to find a way to practice hiring discrimination?  Imagine yourself interviewing in an office or on the phone, and they ask if you use Facebook, Twitter, etc., and request you to hand over your password!  Would you do it?  I sure hope not!  Most likely I would lose my cool and laugh in their faces, but still no way would I ever do that.  WHAT an invasion ...

My Employer Is Moving From Trans To MQ's VR Platform
Oct 05, 2011

My employer use MedQuist’s DocQScribe software and is moving us all onto its VR.  So far, what we’re seeing from the VR is almost completely garbage, but MedQuist claims that our corrections will “teach” the VR to recognize our dictators’ speech patterns.  Of course, our wages are being renegotiated, as well.  We have about three dozen MTs and I think a few hundred dictators.  So far, it takes me about 25% longer to correct this VR trash than it ...
