About references. MT over 25 years and have none - HELP

Posted: Mar 25, 2015

I initially went to work as an MT in-house for a practice in 1990.  They outsourced to a company that I went to work for in 2000.  The medical practice was bought by a hospital, so switched their work to another facility.  I continued to work at home for CyMed.  They were sold to SPi, who eventually closed shop.  I left in 2009 to work for Meridian Health Solutions.  In 2013, Meridian sold out to MM, and here I sit at MM, who states they ONLY verify employment, and do not give references.  Now what?  I have done this for so long, with no credible references.  I am good at what I do.  Exceed requirements, pass audits, and so on.  How can I better myself from here when everyone I have worked for in the past is out of business?

can you still use personal friends as references - lisa

like pastors, teachers, people you know that are also employed?

I think legally this is all they can do-sm - anon

My understanding is that most places cannot give a true reference any more beyond stating whether or not you are eligible to be hired. Most employers expect this so I would not worry too much about the reference part.

I happened to have saved all my former supervisors' names and phone numbers. I put a few down on the application/resume, and next to it put "last known contact information." You can't do this on those dumb electronic applications, but you can on the paper ones.

Also, to save space on the resume and so it doesn't look like you've had a gazillion places you've worked in a short period of time, I put "blah-blah, inc, then in parentheses "formerly blah-blah, formerly blah-blah." I even ended up blending 2 companies that weren't really always related. They're not going to investigate the trail. You can get that on one line. And, you can bring up in the interview that there were mergers and buy-outs, and you're wanting to keep your resume on one page.

If it doesn't say "job-related" references, then you can use friends who have known you a long time, etc. Generally speaking, you can't use relatives' names, but after that, it's a free game.

I'm out of the MT biz, but this has worked fine for me.

I have had the same problem with using my last employer as a business reference. The H.R.
Dept says they will only verify my employment. Good thing this new job I'm starting (not as an MT) accepted the verification of employment. Its sad, after almost 15 yrs with a company that eliminates their transcribers, they wont even give a proper reference.

That is pretty common now; companies/hospitals will only "verify" employment. The hospital I worked for and retired from with over 2,000 employees also follows this rule of thumb. However, I got around this by personally asking the VP and my supervisor if I could use them as a reference and they said that would be fine.

What I have done - resume

I also asked my supervisor I have worked under for a number of years if I could use her as a reference, but I admit I felt comfortable doing this because we are part of a buy-out and I felt she would be understanding of why I was looking for another job when I approached her. I have also used the info of several former co-workers that I have worked with at former MT jobs. They may not personally be able to vouch for my quality, but they do know I was employed at company xxx for a long period of time, which I feel in itself says something positive about me.

You could also consider reaching out to maybe a lead you have gotten to know a little and ask if she would give you a good reference. I would call to ask this and not do it through company e-mail though.

I did this - Dee

Before completely getting out of transcription (about a year and a half), I started a part-time job that I used for a reference, my former CNA instructor, and a former supervisor at my ex-MTSO. It worked out fine!

After Years And Years Of Being IC, Obtained Employee Status At A Co. Sm
Nov 26, 2012

Thought that after not having enough work for a couple years now and always chasing work, I'd now have a "real job" as an employee and wouldn't have to worry about a steady paycheck and paying the bills anymore. The reason I thought this was because at the interview and in their professional company emails, they use all the "real job" words:  Shift, scheduled hours, overtime, PTO, benefits, etc.  I felt relieved to finally have a "job." What a big bunch of BS! I was "hired" ...

3 Years. Question: How Many More Years Do You Plan To Be An MT/editor?
Dec 20, 2013

There is much speculation about the field of transcription - how many of us actually plan to be here 5 years, 10 years, 20 years from now. I realize that the field is going to change, which will contribute to your answer. Will there be enough transcriptionists/editors to fill the need in 5 years and in 10 years? Will the industry be forced out of offshoring because of taxes? Will there be a need even for editors if VR gets better? These are all unanswered questions, but my question is, what ...

I have had NUMEROUS MT jobs and I usually "jump ship" when things get bad, work runs out, etc., and it has gotten to the point where I have no references that I feel would say positive things.  Does anyone else have this problem?  I am actually trying to get a job in the "outside world" but everyone wants "references" and it is hard to explain that these transcription companies are not even in my same state, they no absolutely nothing about me, so it makes it very difficult.   ...

Why So Much Pressure About References?
Jan 18, 2015

I'm baffled...I applied with Patient First through Careerbuilder.  I had recruiters pursuing me for months, I get back to them and they tell me I'll be coming to Virginia for testing that I did awesome on the first test, yada yada yada...then I get a call from HR because I didn't fill out the profile on the Patient First website, and now they're all gung ho about references!  I worked at the same MTSO for over 6 years - there's a lot of turnover in MTSO's, ...

Question About Cypress References

How Do I List Professional References On A Job App If I Don't Know My Coworkers?

Legal Transcription - Good Website References
May 16, 2012

Hi!  I used to work for MQ, frequented this board often and appreciated the sound advice.  I have since retired from the medical transcription industry.  Recently I was asked to transcribe some recorded conversations that will ultimately be read aloud in court for a child custody case.  I'm not worried about the actual transcribing, just about proper formatting and such.  I would also like to know an approximate amount to charge, i.e., by the line, by the page, by the hour, etc.?  C ...

Getting References Is Hard When All The MTSOs I Worked For Are Closed
Mar 25, 2013

So I'm applying for a substitute position with my local school system and they want two professional references.  I don't want to ask the current MTSO I work for, nor the physicians in my private accounts.  I've worked for this MTSO for 5 years, a pretty significant length of time considering.  So I'm looking at my resume over the last 10 years and there are five companies closed/bought out. I have been in contact with a company I worked for from 1997 to 2003 ...

I Worked For M*Modal A Couple Of Years Ago Or So And I Worked For Medquist Several Years Ago.

After 36 Years -

Working for Nuance has been horrible since the onset a year ago with immediate pay cut.  Since then it's been one thing and another to make an MT feel imprisoned working for this company.  With their 99% accuracy criteria OR ELSE - very few of us stand a chance of maintaining our jobs.  My job was threatened for not meeting consistent FIESA scores of 99%. Out Of A Job After 20 Years
Dec 18, 2014

After 20 years, I was put out of business by Nuance taking over the last hopsital I was working for and earning a decent living.  I eventually started working for Nuance in August of this year.  I had such a hard time turning in 1100 lines in 8 hours, significantly down from my average of 250 per hour, and not to mention getting stuck with two hopsitals in Maryland that were very, very difficult with the majority being ESLs.  Sadly, i was let go on December 5th because I could not ...
