AHDI and RMT Exam - Suebee

Posted: Dec 05, 2010

I will be graduating from TTC's Medical Transcription class soon so I am now wondering if I should join AHDI and if I should take the RMT.  I have read the information on the AHDI site which of course points to the pros of both. But I have also read posts from seasoned MTs who have not joined AHDI and some of them say that taking the RMT (or CMT for that matter) carries very little, if any, weight when locating a job. I know if you join AHDI while in school you get a discount on membership and a discount on the RMT exam cost.

In a nutshell, what is your opinion on the AHDI and the RMT? Have you done either? If so, why; and if you haven't, why not?

In a nutshell, AHDI is a SCAM operation. They'll - happily take your $, and give zero in return. s/m

That bunch of bottom-feeders, formerly known as AAMT, until they decided to take the "American" out of their name, has for years been championing the offshoring of our jobs, and the relentless lowering of our pay.

I wouldn't care if CMT were mandatory to be an MT. I will never give one red cent of my hard-earned pay to that bunch of shysters.

I second the SCAM. Even the schooling. - AT

Money for testing even? Where are the jobs even? Are these schools even finding you jobs? I have been a transcriber for over 40 years and the jobs are not there. Certification? Who pays more if you are 'certified?' Certified, member, or not...you get laid off. The last MT I knew after school was traveling a hour and a half away just to get the last of the jobs out there, and that was radiology. That department closed. Dead-end job nowadays and 3 cents for VR. But, you still have to know the AAMT Book of Style and all the Stedman's...wait, rules change for every account. Don't bother with any more investments. You're better off taking that knowledges and becoming a useful nurse, plus you get more respect.

I have done both and do not recommend either of them - Pure waste of money

The only people who benefit from you joining AHDI are AHDI's board of directors. You get NOTHING. No representation (they advocate offshoring our work), no preferential treatment when being hired. Nothing at all for the MT, everything benefits AHDI who continues to sell our jobs to the lowest bidder. In fact they USED to be called the AMERICAN Association for Medical Transcription - they don't even have the nerve to use AMERICAN in their name anymore.

Shame on them. They were supposed to represent us, the MTs, they took our money and used to against us. Don't send them another penny.

It will not benefit you in the least, despite all the glowing comments you will hear from them and probably from your school, but speaking as someone who has been in the business 35+ years, it is a worthless organization with a worthless "certification." I was a charter member of this organization and it sounded good in the beginning, but was quickly corrupted to the stinking mess it is today.

Take advice fromthose of us who have wasted money on them and keep you money in your pocket. BECAUSE of AHDI and their shenanigans your pay is going to be chump change and you need to keep every penny in your own pocket!

My findings are similar. I tested for the certification. - former CMT

Never made any more money. Then you had to pay to keep cerified. I never saw their value even when they had American in their title. CMT is important to my company because the owner is an officer or whatever they call themselves and pushes it all the time. And defends offshoring as she says it is speech that is the problem. However, she does speech as well.

My opinion is that if you threw the money out the window it would be of a lesser waste than giving it to that organization. They have done less than helped American MTs. They have hurt us. I would be interested in knowing how offshore MTs feel about them. While they have enabled them to take American jobs, they still have to pay for their certification. I understand it is less, but their wages are paltry and they have to pay in American dollars. I wonder that they don't like them either. I think it is kind of like the bully who makes you pay to cross the street. Is certification in India mandatory to work? If anyone knows, I would appreciate your sharing the information.

Please don't waste your valuable money and time with AHDI. I have been an MT for 30+ years, was a member of AAMT, which was AHDI in its former incarnation, and became very angry and disillusioned at (1) The "sorority sister" attitude of the grand pooh-bah and her sidekick who ran the place and (2) The fact that AHDI got into the proverbial bed with MedQuist to send our jobs offshore. I have made a much higher than average living doing MT (more in the 90s than now due to the economy and changes in the industry), but I have never received a lick of help from AHDI. I personally regard them to be as much of a scam as the matchbook schools. Good luck to you!

Thank you all so much for the input! I was dreading the RMT exam because I find it to be absolutely ludicrous to take the exam without using any references. While taking the classes the use of all available references and productivity tools is constantly drilled into your head. So why would we not be able to use ANY to take the test?
Again, thank you so much for all your input.

They probably say no references"so fewer MTs will - pass the 1st time, thus more $ to AHDI for 2nd, 3r

What I Want From AHDI
Jun 14, 2012

People ask me what I want from AHDI or if it's worth being a member. I am a member. I ask myself why I still pay my membership dues and what I hope to get in return for that money. That's a tough question. Years ago I learned from their journal. I met lots of great people at conventions and seminars. Then the journal and web site started being more promotional instead of educational or professional. There was always something new that was going to change our lives if we would just sig ...

MMODAL for taking my profession of being a skilled worker making a living rate, and turning it into a menial, pull them off the street, minimum wage worker. We are the new gutter rats. AHDI BOS 3
Oct 10, 2014

I recently began a new position where they adhere to the AHDI Book of Style 3 guidelines.  Obviously, not having used this version before I was not aware one of the wonderful changes AHDI has made.  I understand AHDI exists to set the standards as one of their main objectives.  I also was under the assumption that AHDI had been made up primarily of MTs (at least that is who made them to start with) and has grown to include MTSOs.  What I find so infuriating and baffling at t ...

Here Is My Correspondence With AHDI
Mar 03, 2010

I got this note from a guy named Doggett in response to a note I sent to ADHI about throwing roadblocks in front of MTs to getting work and earning a decent living: "On March 24, AHDI members and staff will go to Capitol Hill to speak with their federal legislators, key members of the House and Senate, and administrative agency officials about the critical need for “meaningful use” and EHR certification regulations to recognize how medical transcriptionists work hard to ensure the a ...

AHDI An Advocate?
May 24, 2010

I went to the AHDI web site to see if they might actually be an advocate for transcriptionists, who are always at the bottom of the ladder in most companies.  We are the worker bees and there all the queens, who reign supreme.  Imagine my surprise when at the top of the screen, there is a banner for Transcend, advertising that "they are always looking"   ... Goodbye, AHDI!
Jan 13, 2011

When I was a medical transcription student last winter at a local two-year college, most of us students joined AHDI at the encouragement of our instructors. My membership has expired and in today's mail was a membership renewal request from AHDI. I tossed it in the trash. I can't afford the membership because I can't get a job because AHDI supports offshoring of medical transcription jobs. Goodbye, AHDI. ...

Shame On You AHDI
Jul 17, 2012

They try to get you to certify as an MT, join our organization they say, some companies (although not many anymore) want you to be a CMT, yet as I went onto the website to look something up, Indian transcription companies are advertising on the Benchmark website?  How is that supporting the American MTs and you want us to pay you money every year?  Shame on you.  You will never get any of my money or support.  ...

Why Is AHDI A Scam, You Ask?
Aug 28, 2012

It was a get-rich scheme from the very beginning. Brilliant, really. Except that when they championed the offshoring of our work, and the lowering of our wages, they made it so that most MTs with anything between the ears but empty space would question the value of the BOS, the validity of the CMT, and the very existence of this so-called "for-the-MTs" organization. AAMT/AHDI
Mar 19, 2014

What is even the PURPOSE of the AAMT/AHDI or whatever they call themselves now?  They are in no way representative of me or any other MT that I know and in fact have been a key factor in the demise of medical transcription in my opinion.  A bunch of no life having harridans trying and unfortunately succeeding in making themselves relevant.  In other news, several fellow MTs have written to their state reps regarding offshoring and were told that inquiries into the matter reve ...

Speech Recognition Editing   Performing SRT editing successfully requires a somewhat more specialized skillset than that involved in traditional, manual transcription. There is a different eye/ear/brain coordination dynamic at work in SRT editing compared to transcribing, which often makes it more challenging to identify errors in an SRT-draft document. It is more common in SRT editing for the brain to be "tricked" into thinking that the eye has seen what the ear has heard, due to the lac ...
