When this all started, I posted a thread about my ex-husband being the ER director at our local hospital which uses MQ for ER reports. When I told him about MQ selling 70% of its stock to Cbay, an Indian-owned company, and that they heavily offshored their transcription, he was not a happy camper. I would tell you to read the threads below, but they have gotten soooo long you may never find it. To make a long story short, I told everyone that we DO have choices and to fight this by writing and telling everyone we could think of. Well, I have just been informed by my ex that over the weekend he spoke to one of the administrators of the hospital and they don't like it either. The administrator told my ex to have me work up a proposal and submit it to them to do their ER reports.
The point is that the doctors and hospitals/clinics do care where their records are being processed. Don't forget, they have to pass accreditations, etc. If JCAH comes in and doesn't like the way records look, for instance, lots of blanks, incorrect diagnoses, etc. they don't get their accreditation. The first place JCAH stops is Medical Records.
I think we may not realize just how much we can do about our situation. We may not be able to stop MQ and what is going on, but we are skilled professionals and that means something. If you have been doing this work for very long, you certainly have seen people who think this job is just typing and have come and gone rapidly because they can't do it. I know I have.
Somewhere on the board I read some threads about what the gay movement is doing for gays. These people believe in themselves and will stop at nothing for their rights - en masse - and they are making progress, slow maybe, but progress.. That is the key en masse.
Talk to everyone you know, especially those affiliated with hospitals, clinics, doctors offices, etc. You may be surprised at the responses.
The only problem with all of this is I have no idea what to quote them for doing the work. I have been paid by MQ for so long I don't know what the going rate is. Several years ago, I had an inside view that MQ was charging around 15-16 cents a line (remember we only get usually at most 8 cents, maybe if we are lucky 9 cents), which means the services are charging about twice what we get. I have an idea it is much more now. Interesting that most at MQ haven't had a raise in years, but do you think MQ hasn't? Usually contracts are for I think 1-2 years, so THEY (MQ) probably get a raise every 1-2 years when they renegotiate contracts.
There is so much money in this profession to be had, why can't we (the workers) get some of it. Maybe the only answer to that is to go independent and get the accounts ourselves. We can by pulling up all the stops and contacting everyone we can think of related to all this, including those we think might fight for us to keep our jobs onshore in case independent just isn't an option.
Good luck to all and never underestimate yourself! Set your sights high, open your mouth and go for it-you may be surprised!
