I hope I didn't sound like I didn't believe what you said about the sputnik generation. I definitely do...I just felt like there was a lot more to it than that, and you explained it pretty well.
I think anything carried to an extreme (for example, the hippie movement - the reaction to the establishment) sort of creates a force to balance it (like the religious right) and so on and so on and so on.
Self esteem is great until it is carried to the point of selfishness. Low self-esteem is good to a point as a motivator, but terrible when it is carried too far also.
I just don't think there is any perfect answer, and that the world will go on balancing itself as it always has - as human beings, we will keep on adapting and adjusting to fulfill the needs that arise. |
