If the older ways of education and discipline worked so well, why did things change? Who changed things? It can't all be because of competition with the USSR.
Just to be clear, I am not criticizing your views or being sarcastic in any way, I am just interested in this discussion.
By the way, I'm 37 years old. I don't agree with giving trophies to kids just for showing up. I do believe discipline and hard work actually add to self-esteem, but I also think there are many types of intelligence, not just book smarts, and there is not one single educational system that will fit everyone. My husband was an athlete and probably could not spell refrain without asking me, but he is a genius of practical common sense, an excellent judge of people and their abilities, with a great sense of humor and work ethic and is successful. Yeah, okay, so I'm biased with that example, but I just wanted to illustrate my point about different kinds of intelligence.
Sorry I started to ramble on and on, but to me, this is really a fascinating thread. |
