Our local medical center has had EMR for at least 9 years, and there is still a need for MTs at that institution. The docs type in notes as the patient sits there in the examining room, and this apparently replaces what used to be clinic notes. I can't even imagine a day when a doctor would sit and type an op report or any other type of medical record other than clinic notes. It's great for inpatient notes, too. The record can be accessed from anywhere in the hospital, and some of the docs have access at home. If I am hospitalized with a heart attack, and a cardiologist is caring for me, my primary physician can read whatever is in my electronic chart for the time I spent in the hospital. It does not eliminate the need for MTs. This hospital still needs MTs and still offers OT, so in 9 years, things have not really changed much for the MTs. Clinic notes have just been pretty much eliminated. Who wants to do those boring things anyway?
