I was getting ready to start coding classes and started reading about it being outsourced. I do not want to be in the same boat as I am now with transcription.

Should I just give up on coding all together and look into something else?

If you believe everything you read on forums, you should run and hide. LOL. Not every MT is seeing their work tank. We've heard of a company (maybe, but we don't know its name) that was bought by someone from another country and may or may not send work overseas, which may or may not be the kind of coding you would do if you were a coder. Come on! You could run scared, but there won't be anyplace to run to if you drop your plans after hearing one unsubstantiated story on an anonymous board. I would continue with your plans. Yes, you will hear horror stories. We always have and always will. We hear more of them because now we have the internet where those who are successful rarely post and those in crisis post over and over and over again. Your choice, but I wouldn't do it that way.

I have watched 3 of my MT jobs outsource. My friend is a coder and says she notices her work disappear every day. I dont want to pay for coding classes and not a year later they are outsourced. Already have 2-1/2 yrs of college thinking about going back to finish to be a RN.

Did you not realize that they are bringing RNs in from outside as well? - No job is safe

Go to a hospital and you'll find that many of the nurses barely speak English. You won't find safe harbor there either, but you might enjoy nursing anyway. Go for something you know you'll enjoy and don't worry about whether 'some' of the jobs will disappear for this or that reason. That always happens. Some always survive and others excel. Obviously some don't. It has always been that way and always will.

I don't think she is basing her career choice on what others are saying. The OP has a valid concern if she is going to spend her time and money on school only to find the same thing happening with coding that has happened with MT's. It is valid to want to know if one will be able to get a job in their chosen field once they are done with school!

You do have a good point, but how can someone answer those questions. We don't know what educational program she is going to choose and if graduates of that program are employable or not or if they can even code once they finish. Many can't. Others can.

You are correct that her question is valid. I'm just not sure that we can answer it. We can say what we think or what we believe, but who knows if we are right or wrong.

I think there will be plenty of coding jobs for many years to come. Others think it's history. We're doomed. LOL. I don't think we're doomed, but I expect there will be plenty of challenges in the healthcare field, just as there are everywhere else. I would say that if you go to a good school and do well in it, you'll have about as many chances of finding a good job as you would most other places/careers.

I understand the concern about the future. I'm an MT studying coding and I also wonder whether I made the right choice. No one has a crystal ball to be able to answer whether we will be able to find jobs because there are so many variables, not to mention the school attended and how much effort the student is willing to put into their new career. It still comes down to a person making their own choice, not depending on the opinions of strangers.

Personally, I think coding is a great area to get into - or at least as great as anything else

Nothing is perfect, but I think coding is a good career option if you are motivated to do it.

I understand what you are saying and agree with you. No one could answer if she will be a good student, and if the school she picks will prepare her, etc.

I have a few questions for anyone who is in fact an employee of M-Modal. My current employer just informed us that we were being outsourced to M-Modal. We, being 12-13 MTs, are really freaking out. Forgive me if this topic has been covered and/or beat to death, but were most of you aware that not only does Nuance outsource some/a good portion of the work to India, but that Nuance India actually outsources their work to other companies? It is one thing that they're sending it oversees in the first place, but then once it goes to another company, and potentially another one after that if they're anything like US companies... So I've been a transcriptionist for 15 years, the last 8 years I've been self-employed, contracted to a local hospital (recently bought out by a bigger hospital), and several family practices and nursing homes. The hospital decided to oursource transcription to M*Modal, with each of us getting an "offer" from M*Modal (thus preventing the employed transcriptionists from being able to draw unemployment, nice).
