My dream job and a question for coding students - MTLC

Posted: Jun 08, 2010

I just found this listing for a coder in my area. I think this is the kind of coder position I want when I: A) enroll in a coding program, B) graduate, C) get certified and D) get enough experience.

Here is my question: Are you learning software like what is mentioned below: Vision, Logician and Coding? Or would one probably learn those on the job at entry level?

We are learning to use the 3M encoder software (Ingenix), which is what the clinic where I currently work as an MT will be using in the near future. I'm not familiar with the other programs mentioned. This is a data mining/analyst job, you would not learn these skills at entry level. It takes years of experience to be able to perform audits. Without a college degree, you are about 5 years away from meeting the minimum qualifications for this, counting the experience. A person of this caliber really has to know their stuff to be able to educate physicians and staff. I would suggest setting some smaller goals first such as getting enrolled in school and then seeing where that takes you. I took Excel and Power Point classes at our community college. If you don't know those things, that would also be a good place to begin. I'm not trying to discourage you but I do know that one must crawl before they can walk.

What I like about my dream - MTLC

Compared to MT, I like the fact that there is someplace to go in the coding world. I used to think it was just sitting in a cubicle coding hospital charts and that did not appeal to me much.

Now I have something to shoot for.

Thanks for the input regarding the software. So it looks like some courses do teach that as well. Good to know.

Yes, yes, I know, take a course! I keep posting about the jobs because I would love to see if any coders in some of these positions might post about what they are doing and how they like it.

But first you need to learn how to code and then gain some experience before you would be qualified to work as a consultant/analyst/educator. Very few people land their dream jobs right out of school.
You can get CDs that teach you Excel and Power Point from your own home - Very easy
[ In Reply To ..]
I taught myself several complicated software programs using those CDs and I didn't have to leave home. I didn't have to hurt myself in traffic and bad weather getting to class at a certain time. No pressures about tests or failing grades. As far as software programs are concerned I think that's the way to go. I sure don't need someone standing there telling me which button to push. I wish I could have done school that way from high school on.

I took my Excel class in May so didn't have to worry about bad weather. I live about 15 minutes from the school so for me it was pretty easy to go in the evening after work. I did some online tutorials but wanted to learn from an instructor, there's quite a bit more to Excel than pushing buttons, and they give tests and grades for a reason. I enjoy learning in a group setting once in a while and interacting with other people from my community. Traffic must be fierce where you live if you are worried about getting hurt when you go out, lol!
Yes, I think that was a typo. I have no idea what I meant to say - LOL

Group settings work for some. I get so bored sitting in classes and with that hurtful traffic and all, I'd rather work on my safe little computer at home. I have no idea what I meant to say about that traffic. Maybe I was thinking about earthquakes, hurricanes, or bird flu. Who knows?! At any rate, we all like to learn in different ways.

You can have this dream job. You just have to begin your education with that goal in mind and keep steady on. This is for physician offices or clinics. When you start out coding in a practice or for practices you are exposed to all of that in a way. After you become an expert in all those aspects you can step it up, go for more education and credentials, and keep reaching for your goal! As for the coding software, I didn't learn how to use that until I got into a job.

Dream job and software - MTLC

[ In Reply To ..]
That's kind of what I thought. By having some sense of where I want to end up, I can get my entry-level jobs in the same category.

I realize I won't get my "dream job" before I get the experience, but I like having an outline of where I am going. Along the way I may find I want to do something completely different, and that will be okay too.

Thanks for the info about software. I wondered about that - with MT we just get trained on whatever the new thing is.

I found some books/CDs on Amazon for Excel and PowerPoint. I think self-taught will be the way to go for me.

Excel and Power Point - Anonymous

I found with Excel that even after you learn it and know some of the applications, it will really depend on how your employer uses it, it's a huge program. Doing spreadsheets at home and doing your household budget is one good way to get some practice.

Good point to include practical application as I learn it (like home budget). Thanks.) - MTLC (NM))

Your goal - Redpen

[ In Reply To ..]
This is an excellent goal. It is a good step up from entry-level coding and it's very achievable because it's in the normal progression of coding jobs. Nothing unusual about it.

Vision and Logician appear to be some type of practice management software. (?) They are not taught in coding courses. Don't worry about that until you're actually working. At that point, you can learn whatever your practice uses. Often, if you know one, similar software is easy to pick up.

Excel and PowerPoint, of course, are fairly standard. You can learn them on your own. That's how I do it. It helps to have something you need to do, so that you can learn by doing. A book that includes projects is fine.

Some coding courses do teach coding software, but they usually only teach you one of them. (There are several types.) In any event, once your coding skills are solid, you can easily figure out what coding software does and how to use it. They're not terribly complicated.

Coding Students

I am just wondering if any other coding students sometimes feel so overwhelmed, especially trying to work full time and study. I knew going into this that it wasn't going to be easy. Question For Coding Students
Jul 17, 2013

I'm looking into different coding programs. A local community college is teaching ICD-10, while Career Step, for example, is teaching ICD-9, but offering a "free ICD-10 FastTrack course to prepare you for the transition to ICD-10." Is it odd that Career Step is still teaching primarily ICD-9? What about Andrews? How are they handling this transition? ...

Advising The New Coding Students Or Those Searching For Their First Job
Nov 07, 2012

Coders who post on this board need to remind themselves that it is basically for MTs who are networking.    A medical transcriptionist who is a coding student or has become a newly certified coder has now learned in the last couple of days that: 1.      MT experience, other than medical knowledge, means nothing in the coding world.  There IS a big difference between school coding and actual work. 2.      The ...

Any Students In Coding Courses Found Mistakes?
May 21, 2012

I am almost done with a course that was put together by the credentialing organization.  Now that I am almost done, I have gathered my notes on the course inconsistencies and incorrect answers to submit my comments to them so this doesn't happen to the next student.  I would like to hear the coders' and students' thoughts on this. Doesn't someone take the entire course and fix/correct BEFORE it is offered as a course?  ...

Andrews Coding Grads/students: Questions
Feb 03, 2015

Okay, I wrote the previous post, but I have a few more questions. Any help is appreciated. How much does the coding program cost? How long did it take you to complete, full-time or part-time? Did you feel job-ready when you finished the course? Are there any hidden fees for exams, etc.? If you went the Andrews for MT as well, how would you compare the intensity of the two courses?   I did attend Andrews for medical transcription 8 years ago, and I loved the program then. That is why ...
