Just in case there was any doubt - sm

Posted: Dec 21, 2014

Spoke to someone last night that had a friend fired for Christmas. Not a transcriptionist, but a medical biller in Florida..Their work was outsourced to Pakistan..And to add insult to injury her company actually tried to tell her she had to stay and train her replacement..This is the future of anything medical, and probably anything that can be done from a remote location..

Lets see how that works out for them if the ESLs - code as well as they transcribe. nm

Doom and gloom - Not true for me

[ In Reply To ..]
It really depends on the employer. At the facility where I work, we have openings for coders and billers. We keep transcription QA on site because our outsource vendor makes too many mistakes. Our local hospital has a fully staffed MT department because outsourcing never worked due to errors and turnaround times. How did your friend train a replacement in Pakistan if she lives in Florida? Layoffs happen for many reasons. You are jumping from A to Z without knowing all the facts. Put away your crystal ball and stop dwelling on the negative.

What you never heard of air travel? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
You really do live in a bubble..They were bringing a group to her to train..Ever call customer service, tech support, even the IRS..Most of them are off shored. Keep your head in the sand.
Our annual holiday gloom-fest is upon us, - I see.
[ In Reply To ..]
I see that our annual holiday gloom-fest (also known as the You'll-Get-Yours Celebration) is upon us, sponsored, of course, by the Howeehate'em Group.

Not saying it didn't happen, but it happened to a friend of a friend, and now it is embellished after the fact with tales of nefarious international air travel. Those are the components of an urban legend.

And didn't we hear the same sad story last year? And the year before?

Billers are the lowest-paid people in the entire revenue cycle. If she got fired for that they were doing her a favor.
Bringing group to train - Not true for me
[ In Reply To ..]
Flying a group in from Pakistan to train defeats the purpose of trying to save money. I take it that you have one of those jobs that can't be outsourced?
Difficult to outsource unemployment - LOL

Well from my OWN experience - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I haven't been fired, but a good portion of my work is overseas in various locations. And I have taken about a 12K paycut over the past 8 years. The errors that come back through are horrendous, but they work way cheaper. And yes it can happen, because it has happened. I am ELATED that there are companies out there that value accuracy over money. Share their names please I would much rather work for them..Transcription that is, Im too close to retiring to train for anything else.
Sharing names - Not true for me
[ In Reply To ..]
If I could share names I would. Both of the places I referenced are local and private health care facilities with on site staff. My NT department restructured a couple of years back and we all moved into other jobs, some MT related, some in other areas within our facility. I took a pay cut but am working my way back up, although it was nowhere near what those of you working for services have seen. The other facility that I mentioned continues to have an on site department but probably no new hires. I know outsourcing happens, I was one of its victims but I was fortunate that my employer helped me find something else where I could use my skills.
Sorry, but we were not talking about MT - This is the Coding Board

Neither was I - Not true for me
[ In Reply To ..]
What I said earlier and what I continue to say is that our local facilities have coding and compliance jobs that they can't fill, one of the hospitals has a fully staffed MT department and my facility does QA on site. I think the statement that anything done on computers can be outsourced is a huge generalization; 99% of the population use computers for work. I know people who got laid off, that doesn't mean that everyone will. Back up your statements with some facts instead of hearsay and you might be more credible.
Sorry to hear that, but we aren't talking - about MT
[ In Reply To ..]
Why would you think that your experience in MT holds true for other occupations?
Maybe she's talking about the similarities: - Healthcare clerical work that is -
[ In Reply To ..]
done on a computer, can be done off-site from home (or from India), and the fact that the very companies that ruined the MT industry are now getting into billing and coding as well.

So yes, talking about one's experience during what happened to MT certainly DOES hold true for other occupations.

And don't forget about "advice nurses". Our hospital used to have the advice nurses in the same building as the MTs. Then the advice nurses went away. Yet... you can still call the hospital and talk to an advice nurse. How much you wanna bet that "advice nurse" lives in Bangalore?
So, what are you doing that is completely - safe and pays 40K+?
[ In Reply To ..]
Coding is not clerical work. If you think it is, you have no idea what it is. The federal government classifies it as an allied health profession.

No jobs are completely safe. Even sushi can be made by robots. Unless you plan on spending your life doing menial labor, everything has some risk that must be addressed with willingness to change and to continue learning.

Given what coding pays and the avenues that open up from it, I think it is very foolish and rather destructive to recommend that people stay away from it due to vague and unsubstantiated fears. The people doing this recommending aren't even in the career field and have no idea what they are talking about. They are making poverty wages in MT, apparently, and just have a bone to pick with people who bettered themselves.

I haven't made $40K since the late 1990s. - No job at all, now, but yest, nothing is safe.

(Make that "yes", not "yest!" - Oy vey...I dont type gud...

Why should we listen to advice like that, then? - ???
[ In Reply To ..]
Why should we listen to career advice from unemployed people?
Well, the advice THIS unemployed person would - give is that having NO income - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
isn't really any worse than having the pittance that any MT company pays today. I'm still applying for work - eventually there will be one that is willing to hire a 65-year-old ex-MT. But I'm not wasting one minute of time applying for an MT job. There is no liveable income in it, and it will likely all dry up in short order. And when they start putting more of their eggs into the coding basket, you better believe they're going to do exactly what they did with MT: Buy up their competition, undercut their competitors to the point of pittance wages for their coders, and offshoring of that work as well.

Yes, there are a few more years of coding left before it all goes down the middleman tube, but considering the cost of getting credentialled, the amount of school time required to get credentialled, the current healthcare climate of cutting costs to the bone, and finally, my own age, and it's just not worth it. (To ME.) I'm sure for you younger people interested in coding, it may still be a viable option for the near future. But if I were you, as soon as I landed that coding job, once I paid off my student loans, I'd be back in school again to learn the NEXT career, so as not to be left high-and-dry when that, too, becomes a "matchbook-cover job" like billing and MT did.

the only reason I hesitate to suggest coding as a career - is because it is so hard to get your foot
[ In Reply To ..]
in the door, even with certification. I know several people who are certified but no one will hire them because they do not have experience.
Lack of experience is just an excuse - employers use.
[ In Reply To ..]
Lack of experience is the excuse employers use when they don't want to hire you and can't tell you why.

Saying you know people who are certified really means little. What certifications??? Unrecognized ones? What training? Some local class that employers don't like because they have had bad experiences with their grads? What jobs? The wrong kind of job for the credential?

Inexperienced coders get jobs every day.

E-Scription Doubt
Apr 15, 2014

Hi,   I noticed that some ES users download 5-25 jobs in the user ID even when QUEUE CACHE is set to '1'. That is when they are only allowed to download 1 job at a time. This is a flaw in the software and frustates other MTs who dont do any frauds like this.  Can anybody tell me how they download more jobs at a time?  I just want to stop this practice. thanks Jones ...

If I Ever Had Any Doubt About Going Back To School
Nov 12, 2013

I have been helping my husband finish up his degree online for the last year or so and told him when he is done next month I am going back and finishing up my degree. I know everyone says have a plan, or be prepared but since my husband makes more money and actually has potential for a promotion his schooling was top priority and I have been just praying that my job lasted long enough to get him through. So yesterday I got all my transcripts together, filled out the application and set up ...

Serious Case Of Bunout
May 10, 2012

I know I'm fortunate to have the job I have and to be able to work from home, but I have a serious case of bunout!  I've been trascribing for 25 years and have been looking for another career after recently graduating.  In the meantime, I have to transcribe.  Anyone have any techniques they use to overcome burnout?  It seems it takes all I have lately to sit in my chair and transcribe, and I hate feeling this way!   ...

In My Case, Is Becoming An MT Worth It?
May 29, 2013

I read this message board from time to time but have never posted but am looking for advice.  Last fall I lost a full time job at a bank - which caused me to sincerely doubt my self-confidence as an employee. I then started the career step MT program and am currently about 60% compete. I recently applied and accepted a job at a local, very busy gift/general merchandise store. I like the job. It pays $9 per hour and is about 30 hours a week. There aren't any benefits.  I believe I ...

will tell you one more time what they just did to me. In my former BOB was back up to about $18/hour, getting kudos for having 100% accuracy on many reports. Then switched to a new BOB. After working for about 24 hours on the account I was audited, failed at 98.1% and immediately put on 100% QA at which point I quit. Previously I had been audited once a month (and sometimes went for months without an audit) and when I occasionally failed, was given another month to "improve." I was making 1 ...

Gee, If Amazon Workers Lost Their Case
Dec 09, 2014

I cannot believe this decision. Amazon forces their employees to wait in line to check if they are stealing stuff but will not pay them the half hour extra it takes. In Case You Forget That Nuance Is Not A Transcription Company At Its Core
Jul 16, 2014

I have to admit, I wasn't familiar with what "Ambulatory" transcription would entail, so I went searching on the internet and came across this PDF. It is a stark reminder that Nuance is not a transcription company.  They are a technology company, a speech recognition company, and we are all test subjects to make their speech engine better (through the thousands of doctors dictating and all of our editing).  They don't want to use transcriptionsits to do their work.
