Anyone have more info on CAC? - Student-to-be

Posted: Jan 19, 2012

I was doing my own research and ran across this and would like to know if anyone has an opinion on whether CAC is going to change the scope of the coders job down the road?  Good or Bad?

I called AHIMA and spoke with a very helpful - Student-to-be

...person, that gave me the information I needed, although I feel a little "naive" now, for even asking, oh well. Also read this and it cleared it all up for me. Hey, well that's what school is for right?

An important skill for a - Coder

Is the ability to meet the needs of the audience. Another is the ability to summarize and present information. So for the benefit of those of us who are posting from a mobile browser, can you tell us at least something about what you read?

I hope it told you that the function CAC will fill is a very basic one and that there are many more things coders can do and more jobs they can move into. What you learn in coding programs is enough to get a first job. After that you advance.

I have to wonder if accountants raised this much of an issue over spreadsheets. "OMG! Accounting is dead! Someone has invented the spreadsheet and I will not have to laboriously total up thousands of lines of data by hand anymore! My reason for being is gone!"

Awesome, my first class! - Student-to-be

The healthcare industry is creating powerful tools to transform clinical data input into useful clinical data output. Clinical coding is approaching a tipping point where an increasing amount of work is done by machine, saving precious time and human resources for more complex coding and much needed data analysis tasks.

Automation in the form of computer-assisted drafting and computer-assisted manufacturing, for example, has revolutionized many industrial processes and allowed humans to build structures and machines not previously possible. The same process is on the horizon for clinical coding.

The current coding workflow is expensive and inefficient. The coding process requires that coders know more and code with greater accuracy and speed than ever before.

As CAC technology becomes increasingly sophisticated there will be less demand for coders to perform manual coding tasks. Computers will not replace all of the people who are currently working as clinical coders, but computers will begin to reduce the number of hours spent manually assigning codes. Computers are not capable of taking on the new roles and responsibilities and performing the review, validation, and oversight tasks that will be created as a result of computerization of clinical coding.

Computer-assisted coding is a budding technology whose time has come, and it heralds a new era for coding professionals.

Building skills in the following areas can help position professionals to capitalize on the advantages of CAC tools:

Clinical data management
Healthcare data analytics
Clinical documentation improvement methods
Conversational information technology (IT)
Project management for IT
SNOMED CT basics

AHIMA offers online courses in these and other topics. Go to http://campus.ahima.org for more information on Web-based training or to http://imis.ahima.org/orders for other professional development opportunities.

Well, that's the best I could do, I'm kind of a nerd when it comes to technology, so I I guess I have a long way to go and a lot to learn about "getting to the point". Thanks for the practice!

Here is something I found on the subject of CAC - MTLC

The following is the last 2 paragraphs from an article in the recent on-line edition of For The Record:

Quote: Smith doesnât believe adding CAC principles to educational programs would be much of an adjustment. âWe can very easily change our focus in education to giving students the codes and saying, âIs this wrong or is this right, and why?â Itâs not like you have to throw your curriculum away,â she says.

Smith suggests that instead of focusing on efficiency during the coding process, educators could work on cultivating studentsâ ability to dissect documentation and work backward from the code itself. âI would love to see education programs transition to more CAC-simulated activities so the students feel more comfortable and confident in their role,â she says. âThat can be done in the safe learning environment of the college, so they can practice their skills and thereâs not such a gap between education and industry.â
- End Quote.

I recall advice being given on this board multiple times that it is important to think like a coder not just know how to look up codes. So coding education needs to be about why not just about how.
In most courses you're lucky if it's about anything except paying your tuition - sm

Enough said about the awful coding schools with no qualified teachers I guess. You would think they would have someone who knows how to code to answer questions.
Excellent! Good information! - sm

Thank you! That was excellent! It provides a good discussion of CAC and explains why coders have little to fear. At least, he ones who want to meet a challenge have something to look forward to.

The coding that everyone fears losing is the boring part of the job. If coding were accounting, it would be the green eyeshade, big sheets of columnar ruled paper, fountain pens with ultrafine nibs, the manual transfer of minutely written numbers, and spending long hours doing nothing but mental math.

I already do those things you listed. That is how I know it is valuable and interesting work. Without a knowledge of coding, though, you can't really do most of it.

You did a nice job on that. I thought you got the points down just fine!

I Just Need To Add, Regarding The CMT Info
Mar 26, 2010

My current CCM is one of the best of the many I've had. I had previously worked with her on this account from1999 until we were sold to MQ in 2005; she is my 6th or 7th CCM here at MedQuist. She is very familiar with our hospital, very friendly, easy to communicate with, quick to answer emails, and always keeps us up to date. The CMT differential was mentioned earlier as part of MQ new plan; if you have not heard yet, maybe your CCM has not gotten around to it.  The 0.005 cpl i ...

Info On OSI?
Jul 19, 2010

So what is there to know about OSI before I make a life-changing decision? Minimum line count for FT? Approximate cpl for a "very experienced" MT, for straight typing; cpl for VR? Do they use 65 ch/l? I heard that their system apparently allows MTs to produce +30%...I find that extremely hard to believe. I'm doing 250-300 l/hr consistently on my relatively ancient system, using AutoCorrect on Word, rather than a regular abbreviation program. How in the world could OSI's system impr ...
