SM Transcription... - Wiseenough

Posted: Feb 28, 2011

PLEASE..do not be foolish enough to work for this company!!  They are offerring 3 cents for VR.  A seasoned MT well versed in voice recognition software, particularly Editscript, produced by eEscription out of Massachusetts, can make 500-600 lines per hour. At 3 cents a line that is slave wages. It will average you 12 cents a line on a good account.  I knew this would happen eventually.  I am making 4.5 cents on Editscript and making 28-30 an hour before my IC status. Do not take a job for under 4 cents per line for VR.  This just ****** completely.  Stay away from this company. If you get an account with heavy specifics..you will be looking at making 9 dollars an hour.

Is this the same company that is offering 2 cents per line while your training on it? Because I got that email today and it pissed me off too. I currently work for an account on Escription and make 5 cents a line. How do these companies find people to work for wages like that. Anybody who works for that is crazy!!

What a difference a penny makes - See message

I accepted a position about a year ago, desperately needing a supplement to my FT job which was sporadic on work. I accepted this extra full-time position which was for a new account still on straight transcription but being trained to go to eScription. The pay was 8 cpl for straight transcription, then dropped to 3.5 cpl for editing.

The first paycheck was fantastic. For the most part great dictators and transcribing 250 lph was easy-peasy. By week 3-1/2, however, most of the reports started going to draft and editing wages.

My other FT job pays 4.5 cpl for editing on eScription and, if there is sufficient work available throughout the pay period, I bring home a very nice monthly income. I figured, "How much difference can 1 penny per line less really make?"

Whoa, did I find out the hard way. Not only were there way too many MTs on the account when it went to VR and only half the staff was needed (making it dog eat dog when it came to trying to grab reports just to make the minimum line count), but holy pennies, Batman...I actually cried and my husband had to console me when I got my first paycheck for full-time editing.

Between the lack of work once nearly every dictator was on editing and the 3.5 cpl salary, my entire check for 2 weeks of being chained to my computer for 16 hours a day (8 hours being taken up by my other full-time job) was a whopping $323. Seriously, I was sobbing hysterically.

NEVER AGAIN will I even consider an editing job that pays less than 4.5 cpl. I don't know how it is that 1 penny, which seems so inconsequential, can have such a devastating effect on one's income, but by golly, it surely does.

And rest assured, the company of which you speak is definitey not the only MTSO offering that ridiculous salary.

Hope you find something better ASAP!

I cannot understand this - 3 cpl for editing

[ In Reply To ..]
I seriously do not understand how people can work for this. Transcription Doctors right now is hiring editors for 3 cpl as an IC! After taxes, what are you making???

How can we exist like this? Honestly, this is not a paper route, or a baby sitting job. The amount of schooling and the years of experience right out the window...

3 cpl - Sick of it

[ In Reply To ..]
that comes out to $7.50 an hour. Below minimum wage. 250 lines edited an hour x 0.03 = $7.50

how many lines realistically can one edit per hour?

Selling our profession down the River - Lynn

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been an MT for over 25 years, making the same line rate then as I am now. We've sold ourselves out...there are so many new MTs willing to work for 4 cents, 6 cents, even 8 cents a line.

That is INSANE!!! We can begin to ban together and take back our profession. All the hospitals in our country can't possibly outsearch everything, especially with the new HIPPA rules in our country, that I'm pretty sure other countries don't have to comply with.

Lets raise the standards in our profession, stick together, and DEMAND a decent salary!

That ship has sailed. The industry has changed in too many ways - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
...to count in the past decade. The cpl paid to companies must be split a zillion different ways now. Less and less goes to the MT and more and more goes to corporate overhead, infrastructure, software, management, recruiting, hiring, payroll, sales staff, IT, advertising, development - and most companies contract their voice rec from another company and that likely costs a hefty cpl.

The gravy days are over. Technology is advancing at a rapid rate. I made 12 cpl in 1999. I make 4 cpl less than that now, and I also have had to hone my skill set to meet the demands of VR. So far I'm keeping my head above water, but it's not the same as before when I picked up tapes, or downloaded my dictation and rerecorded onto a recorder.

Banding together, making demands, forming unions etc. will only drive the work further from us. And yes, it is perfectly legal to outsource the work offshore, HIPAA and all.

Slave wages - 15 +/- exp

Since when is $18/hour slave wages (600 x.03/line + $18/hour). I wish I made that an hour!

Is that possible? are you reading the report at all at that stage?

I worked for this company VERY briefly. She is VERY much a stickler, when it comes to QA and formatting. As well, she had hired very seasoned MTs who were frustrated to the point of tears. Last thing was that she also paid monthly, which I could deal with being single. I quit after about 2 weeks.

DO NOT work for them - Seasoned MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I had decided to supplement my income further with this company. They required 3 days of testing. On day 2, I was offered a contract and on day 5 they rescinded it. The corrections I had seen from QA were ridiculous, not BOS at all. The emails I had received to me and the "group" I started with, were of a very bitchy tone and nature. I didn't further myself with the company at all.

GET OUT OF TRANSCRIPTION
May 17, 2010

Since the advent of voice recognition and overseas outsourcing, transcription has ceased to be a profession.   I will NEVER -- repeat, NEVER make the money I was making as a transcriptionist at a hospital 5 years ago, before we were replaced by VR and cheap outsourcing to India.   Now all that's left are transcription companies here in the U.S. that don't want to pay much more, lie to us and tamper with our line counts.   GET OUT, GET OUT OF TRANSCRIPTION! ...

A Day Without Transcription?
May 28, 2010

It seems that everyone has negative things to say about how employers do not pay MTs what they're worth and how they offshore the easy stuff, but pile on the lousy ESL stuff on the transcriptionists in the States. Too bad there can't be a general strike of U.S. MTs - a day without transcription - just to show how we're needed. It seems to be the only thing employers would understand. Impossible, I know, but I bet employers would sit up and take notice. ...
