People who work for this company will know who I'm talking about... - see message

Posted: Nov 03, 2012

This company got a huge account that we as MTs cleaned up their late reports at a rate of 9 cpl (1,000 to 2,000 or more) as they put them in our system.  Not a bad line rate, right?  Dictation was bad, sound quality sucked, and on and on.

Now that they are dictating into our system daily, the "contract has been renegotiated" and if we still want to type for the account we are getting 7.5 cpl.  What a damned ripoff!!

Who can guess what company this one is?  I'll let you know if your guess is right.

This company - Cranky now

[ In Reply To ..]
I know what company this is, because I work there and received the e-mail that you are referring to regarding the renegotiation. However, I wasn't getting 9 CPL, I was getting 8 CPL as I do for my other accounts. Now I'm wondering why I was only getting 8 CPL. Hmmm... "I" can I have a raise, please?

Sorry, typo, my bad. It was 8 cpl, not 9 cpl. Still sucks. - nm

I work for the company you are referring to, but my thought is sm - COMT

[ In Reply To ..]
if you don't like the line rate, then don't ask to type on the account. I certainly don't want to. Even if the sound quality is improved, some of the dictators are really awful. Should it pay more? Probably. But then again, it is your choice to type on it enough. I have a good primary and a decent secondary, so I am happy. They pay faster than any company I have ever worked for and the situation could be a lot worse. Sorry you are unhappy, though. They have 9 cpl accounts, I am told, but I am assuming they would be the more difficult ones. Good luck.

Not shocked - buns

[ In Reply To ..]
Why not just say OTI? They certainly are happy to keep the slave wages flowing to get their pockets stuffed. Yes, they pay fast and on time. Have you ever wondered how many of those individuals who determine what the line rates should be have lived on even 8 cpl? If we believe we are simply lucky to have work and are so lucky to be paid on time, no matter how little, then we should not be surprised there will be those willing to take advantage of our need to work and get fat and happy from our labor. Just the mere fact that the account was renegotiated for less money for the MT does not mean the bottom-line nellies are taking a cut at all. Check the archives when they cut rates across the board in 2010. Their latest âin search ofâ emails all offered less than 8 cpl for accounts they were trying to staff. Perhaps this is yet another slide into the abyss of cutting rates again? Soon we will have to turn into robots so we can work 24 hours a day, but at these rates, that will still not be enough to make a living.

They are one of the few IC companies that actually let you be an IC. sm - comt

[ In Reply To ..]
You submit your own schedule, which is only days you want to work and lines you want to produce, not set hours or anything like that, and if you don't meet it that day, no one calls and rants at you. The wages could be more, yes, but there are certainly a lot of companies offering less and demanding more. Bayscribe is an easy platform and even at 8 cpl, that gets me $24-28 an hour, so yes, I will still sing their praises. Sorry you are so unhappy with them. I hope you find a company that treats you better.

Are they hiring? Straight typing only? nm - IC is what I need.

[ In Reply To ..]

Their web site says they are not hiring only. They have VR accounts, I think, but sm - comt
[ In Reply To ..]
my 2 accounts are straight typing. The account they are talking about is straight typing as well, but I wouldn't want it.

Amazing account - buns

[ In Reply To ..]
I like Bayscribe as well, but the account is horrible and that definitely impacts production. The dictation is often garbled and muffled making it impossible to gain any speed. They actively push to keep this account out of work and that is another part of the problem. I am sincerely happy that it is working out for you as it seems like you have a good account and that is very rare indeed. Best wishes to you.
Are you saying this new account is your primary? sm - comt
[ In Reply To ..]
If so, I would be upset as well. Even if the sound is improved, the dictators were not so hot. I helped out with the overflow, but I did not ask to be put on it on a regular basis. Maybe you could ask to be on another account? My primary account is doing ERs, but when I asked they gave me a secondary account. Every place has their ups and downs. I used to work at MDI and made 11-1/2 cpl at one point using Bayscribe, but ..... no sense dwelling on that. I hope you find something that suits you better. We all work so hard for so little. It would be nice at least if the account wasn't horrible.
This account - HopelessMT
[ In Reply To ..]
Just so I am not confused, we are talking about a clinic account, correct? If this account got caught up and is now usually out of work, can someone explain why they are hiring more people for this account? And is the account really that terrible compared to any other accounts you have worked on for either OTI or other MTSOs? Thanks for any info.
Info - buns
[ In Reply To ..]
I am on an acute care account that is never supposed to run out of work. It consistently runs out of work across the span of the entire pay period, not just near the end of pay. They have hospital MTs on this account as well, which I was not told about at the time of hire. This also appears to be a backup account for other MTs that run out of work on their primary, adding to the lack-of-work issues. The only time the account has work is perhaps on the weekend. I have never listened to such lazy and careless dictators, and I have been doing this for other MTSOs for a long time. I spend a great deal of time having to delete large amounts of work (sometimes over a page) because the dictator changes his/her mind and says âjust back that up and letâs start over.â Lab values and EKG reports are slurred over. There are often huge discrepancies in diagnoses, test results, and medications because the dictator stops and reads the chart, tries several times to pronounce the word in question, and then dictates something entirely different because they cannot say the word. Different lab values are dictated from the beginning of the report to later in the report when referring to the same admission test result, not to signify a change in the patientâs status. If you send in discrepancies, the blank is often replaced with the dictated word without leaving a discrepancy note. So much for patient care! It seems as if most of them use a cell phone so dictation cuts in and out forcing the MT to leave blanks because multiple areas are inaudible. Tracking this over a period of time, production has ranged from $9 an hour to $20 an hour, giving one a real dose of reality as to how much dictators impact the MTs bottom line. It does not take long to figure out how many more hours you will have to put in on a day you get nothing but the bottom-dwelling doctors. Jobs come in automatically so you really can have a 12-hour day of nothing but garbage. You can have blazing typing speed and all manner of shortcuts saved, but in the end, the dictators that will not talk and read the chart on your time, keep asking you to delete and start over, whisper in what sounds like a construction zone, dictate on devices that make every word muffled and garbled, etc. will cost you a chunk of money. Yes, I did ask for a backup account, and it was worse than this one!! Every MTSO has horrible accounts that they bend over backwards for and coddle like a new baby; they just will not tell you about them.

What's Your Secret to Getting $24-28 per Hour - at 8 cpl?

Bayscribe is the easiest program on the planet to use. I worked at Oracle at 8 cpl and because of my glossary and speed, was able to make type almost 350-400 lines per hour. Do the math. They were great to me, and had I not found something that paid more, I would still be there. I never ran out of work and if I ever should have the misfortune to lose my position, I'd go back there in a heart beat.

As we all know, everyoneâs experience at the same MTSO is not necessarily the same. Some MTs have accounts that allow them to have an appropriate hourly return for their work, others do not. I noted above that I did get a second account, which was worse than the primary and at less money. It was a situation I chose not to work with so I have another side gig or I could not survive on OTI. Please note, blanket statements based on your personal experience are not helpful to others.

I do not understand what you are complaining about. When this account came on board I got the impression that it would be a bit quirky getting it online etc, and as time has moved we have learned that it was a formerly off shore account, the client was unhappy with the quality, that audio would be poor initially, etc.

Since that time as I have worked on this particular account when able (due to my other accounts consistently having work) the audio has improved greatly. I quite enjoyed typing most of the reports I received, but everyone has likes and dislikes.

I am fairly certain that the first e-mail we received said we would receive our regular pay for this account which for me means 0.075 per line. Further, we were told we could request the work if desired and preferably to only request the work when our other accounts were in turn around time.

As a lowly MT who has not typed very long when compared to most, I must say that OTI has been very professional and kind. The office staff is very helpful, and the night crew is quick with responses. Additionally, when I needed additional work, I simply requested another account. The office staff provided me one within my level of ability, and I have been happily typing since that time. Maybe you could simply have a frank conversation with the staff that goes something like, my current account is too difficult for me, may I try something else. I have no doubt that you will be surprised at how helpful the staff will be for you.

but pros for me are that I've heard you can make a good line count. I used to average 300 lines straight (500 VR) at my old company with Extext/ExEditor, which would be fine for me at 7.5. I've also been told Bayscribe is a good platform, people are friendly, QA is not daily nitpicking (why do these other MTSOs think anyone can work like this!), and it's a true IC company and you commit to lines instead of a schedule. Is this true?
some truth, not all - anonny
[ In Reply To ..]
QA is nit-picky, depends on which person is QAing your work.

BayScribe is simple, but there are better ways to work in regards to expansion programs and it's spellchecker is woefully inadequate.

You commit to lines each day on a schedule. Not lines per week or pay period. But you don't commit to a set time frame to work. You are required to work a minimum each weekend.

I personally do not think BayScribe is as slick as Extext or some other platforms. It's easy to use, but not necessarily fast at producing lines.
