My dream - varesa

Posted: Apr 17, 2011

I am looking forward to the day when I ask about a company and the response is; "it's the greatest company!!!!  They really understand that they would not be in business without the wonderful work we do and they appreciate all their MTs.  They pay 10 cpl because fair compensation is their standard.  There is trust and respect for our work.  Also, penty of work for everyone who is willing to work".

I actually saw a job posted that stated the line rate as 6 to 6.5 cpl!!!  Where do they think we live?  Bangladesh?

Just needed to vent as it is so dispiriting to read that every company you apply for has high negatives from many posters.

It never hurts to dream - me2

I'm with you, Varesa. Our profession has lost its way, thanks to cheap labor overseas and greedy hospitals and clinics in the U.S. When will they realize that they really DO get what they pay for?

How much is enough? - Varesa

It is worth noting that compensation has not kept up over the years. Have to wonder how much money is enough for them.

There is power in numbers and wonder whether anyone has considered organizing to give MTs some employment clout?

enough - Deana

Enough is enough. I was terminated for expressing my unhappiness with fact the company I was with was hiding work and assigning it to "new hire" employees who were making less than those of us who had been with company. I was tired of being walked on treated with no respect-I worked 7 days a week as a lead, and MT and QA so I saw all aspects. I knew what they were doing. They got rid of me quick when I voiced it in open forum. I would love to establish an organization who backs MTs that would get us benefits, taxes paid again and line rates that are indicative of our hard work and knowledge. These companies take advantage and are making tons on our bareboned fingers from typing. How does an industry go from .09-.10 to we start at .085. Do you know nannies have more rights in employement than we - they fought for it as it was area of employment that was ungoverned. Imagine all the tax money the gov is losing because these companies dont pay into S.S. or federal taxes anywhere close to what they should because its our responsibility. I break even each year I have yet to pay more than 100 in taxes after filing as an IC. Boy wouldnt IRS like to know these companies operate this way LOL

Your abusive situation is common. We all have our horror stories, especially if you've been in the business for any length of time.

Now to figure out how to go about empowering MTs. Creating it is the first thing. The second thing is getting people to put their own interests above fear of the company.

I worked in another business once and tried to get the few employees there to meet with management to talk about better conditions. I arranged the meeting and as I sat there, the manager told them to get back to work, which they did, and I was fired (not in the USA BTW). So it does take courage but can be done if enough are willing to put their fears behind them and try to make it work.

Will do some research and see what I can come up with.

I work for a great company! - DK

I love Amphion!! We have a 3-tiered line rate based on QA, the staff is super-awesome, friendly, and so helpful. I am looking forward to their CMT class, bout time I get my butt in gear and get credentialed I guess.

I love Opti-Script too - MT@home

Opti-Script has the 3-tiered line rate based on QA too, and the management team and QA is terrific! They also pay extra for CMT, so I got mine a couple years ago. It makes me appreciate what I've got when I read posts on this board.

I am really happy for you. Sadly, your situation is not common. I have been in the business for many years and enjoy the work. The really good companies that respect their MTs, pay them fairly, and treat them well are, as they say, like hen's teeth.

I work for a great hospital. They pay excellent. We receive full benefits just like every other employee. Great retirement. Sad so many companies under value their MTs.

Your situation sounds perfect! I'm really happy for you. Now we just need the other MT companies to take a note out of their book and that would solve so many of our problems :)

I worked for a great company/hospital too until they decided to outsource to India almost overnight. Had great benefits and thank God an excellent retirement and enough years in to retire so I was not toally without anything like the other 5 people that lost their jobs because of it. Always thought I would be working there until I decided to retire but new management took care of that. Count your blessings and I hope you get to keep your job. I have gone back to work part-time with a good company, making less money but basically just because I wanted to go back to work.

I wonder sometimes when companies say they treat you like family, if maybe they mean sm - The Manson Family

Manson family - Varesa

[ In Reply To ..]
You are too funny and probably right :)

Our view of family is diametrically opposed to theirs. They have the most dysfunctional interpretation of "family" I have ever come across!!

Manson family - Too funny

My company says that care about their employees, at least that is what their ad says - all I can say is ABSOLUTELY NOT!! Must be a cousin of the Manson's.

What happened to our profession?  I thought we were "Medical Language Specialists"?  We should be compensated for our expertise and knowledge.  I have a solution to our latest, serious, escalating problems with this "armed robbery in plain sight" of our well-earned, inadequate pay...in order to be a medical language specialist who listens to unintelligible doctors with foreign accents; doctors dictating 5 words in 1 word; background noises o ...

Dream Job
May 05, 2012

After almost 6 months of being unemployed,I was very lucky this week to find a position that pays an hourly wage. I feel so good about this and it is way more than minimum wage with a company. I want to make this one work out and am very positive about it. It's amazing what knowing what you will make each day can do for your moral. It takes some of the stress off. ...

My Dream Job
Oct 08, 2012

I was offered my dream job over the weekend.  I don't want to name the company as they were great.  The woman who hired me was terrific.  I know I wasn't their first choice as I got the call on Saturday, could I start right away.  I filled out the contract, printed all the information.  It took me all day Saturday.  I was anxious and excited.  As the day went on I noticed little things that I wasn't told about the platform.  There was no sp ...

Am I In A Bad Dream Or What?
Jan 15, 2013

Suddenly, all of my reports are horrible, the dicators are so bad and the sound quality so low and fuzzy. Somebody please wake me up from this bad dream. Yesterday I had a dictator who was so annoying, when he said "median raphe" and VR put "middle finger," you can't imagine (or maybe you can) how badly I wanted to keep the VR version! I hope this isn't the way it's going to be from now on. This is like the account I had when I first started with MM (then MQ). I thought I ...

Getting Out Of MT - Am I Too Old For Dream Job
May 28, 2013

I will be starting college this fall.  I am no longer going to be in transcription - just can't do it anymore.  I want to be an RN.  After I finish college I will be 40.  Now, I know 40 isn't old, but is it too old to be a nurse?  I feel like hospitals and clinics would want the 20 something nurses who have endless amounts of energy.   ...

Dream Kitchen/office Ideas
Jul 30, 2010

Hi my fellow MTs!  Pinch me I am dreaming!  My SO is building us a new home, and Monday we meet with the kitchen designer/cabinetry dude to layout the kitchen, which will include my office. He was insistent that he build a corner desk overlooking the woods, the best view of the house!  He did not want me holed off in another room of the house, but wants to keep me in the heart of it!  Yes, he has an ulterior motive... preparing scrumptious meals while I work... but thats fine ...
