Is 8 cpl for straight transcription as an IC too low? - second guessing myself

Posted: Dec 17, 2011

I'm looking to transition from being an employee to an IC postion.  I've been offered 8 cpl for straight transcription.  Is this the new going rate, or should I hold out for more?  I've got about 9 years of experience.  Thanks!

8 cents - MT

It's pretty much the going rate...in fact, some places are trying to pay 5 to 7 cents per line.

I think you have different things to factor that - just the number.

Depending on the company and the amount of work, it may be a pretty good deal. The company I work for starts ICs around 8 cpl. They are a great place to work for, and they don't overhire. Also, you have to consider if it is a true IC type position where you work in a TAT, it may be worth it to be able to manage your schedule with what suits you.

I actually had to laugh at a job on the Job Openings Board - Really? Strict TAT 22 hours

for clinic and 4 hours for the other work types.

Yepper straight type for whopping 6 cpl 65 char line!

NO THANK YOU! I value myself more than that!

I saw that too... - Kayla

and thought, ya right....I'm looking for more than I get now, 7.25 cpl. I'm certainly not going to downhill!!!

6 cpl as an IC equals about 4.5 cpl - after taxes. OMG! nm

Better than .04 on ASR with a company - nm

I'd take 8 cpl. It seems most of these companies are going down on their pay rates instead of up. I only have 6 years experience but I'm still getting 7.25. My last job paid 8 cpl. I'm not going any lower. If I have to, I'll quit and finish my accounting degree. I know I can make more in that field.

I think they are trying to eventually - get all MT jobs

[ In Reply To ..]
down to 5 cpl. That way if you can average 200 lph you make $10 an hour, which they probably think is a fair wage. Just an opinion, but I think that is what it will eventually come to.

Please see my other comment about this (SM) - Another MT

I made a comment about this on another thread but will rehash here.

Please consider it from the MTSO's point of view too. I'm in the process of trying to hire an IC to help me with some of my overload. Straight typing.

I can only afford to pay 8 cpl because I only make 12 cpl AND it's my company name on the letterhead and I'm providing and paying for the software, server space, computer, etc.

If I could afford to charge 18-20 cpl like MQ and other companies, then I'd expect to pay more to an IC but when I'm trying to keep my own head above water, is it really unfair to want to keep a small portion of the cpl I earn to cover my overhead?

Besides, when the IC needs/wants time off, I'm the one covering. I'm editing. I'm fielding phone calls from the client. I'm doing all the leg work.

8 cpl for straight typing working for a former MT who understands that end of the business might just be a dream job, especially since with 24-hour TAT, you can set your own hours and won't be sitting by the computer 8-10 hours waiting for work.

Just wanted to put that out there from the "other" side of the fence.

I see what you are saying - whats the deal - with the low balling at 6 cpl

[ In Reply To ..]
I think its pretty insulting and disgusting to try to pay skilled people at 6 cpl - i think I made more out of school!

Hey that's not me! (sm) - Another MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I have no clue who the person is paying skilled people 6 cpl. It's not me.

I would never advertise for help on the internet since I will only hire someone in my physical area.

Just wanted to let you all see the other side of the coin when you gripe about a small MTSO paying 8 cpl. Sometimes that's all we can afford to pay. If you want more, get your own clients would be my suggestion.

Not a small MTSO. nm - second guessing myself

are they really an IC? Doesn't that technically make them an employee?

8 cpl is great! Post the name of the company. I am only getting 6.5 cpl. I am skeptical of this job board. I have applied to every job and no replys. I have 20+ years experience, pass all the tests. I am thinking I have too much experience. This field has really hit the skids. Quantity over quality. It's sad. VR is horrible. I don't care what anyone says. Have not seen one system that really works well!

Increased ASR, Less Straight Transcription??
Oct 24, 2010

Anybody notice increased ASR in the last week or 2, with less straight typing.  Just when I thought I had already hit the lowest I possibly could, they do this.  I was at least getting between 100-300 transcription lines before, now all the sudden lucky to get any.  My pay has already been deposited in the bank, down another $100 from before.  What do they want next, blood? ...

VR Versus Straight Transcription
Apr 28, 2011

With my company I get about 80% editing and 20% straight transcription, about half as much per line editing as for transcription, of course.  Personally, I'd rather transcribe a difficult dictator than edit most anyone.  My pet peeve is when a difficult dictator's reports (which used to be transcribed) gets changed to editing status, and it takes just as long to fix the VR document but now at about half as much pay. ...

Sorry to bother everyone, but knew I could get an answer here.  You have a job that comes to you as VR, can someone tell me exactly what you do to change it to straight transcription?  I thought I remembered if being F11 so I did that and it said it was going to delete the text. Straight Transcription Counted As ASR
Nov 25, 2013

Noticed today that my one and only transcription report, was counted as an ASR job. What? I debated what to do, because it was a short dictation, after all. But, no I can't allow that. IC For 7 Cents A Line For Straight Transcription....sm
Aug 23, 2011

What Is The Going Rate In The Midwest For Straight Transcription And For VR?
Oct 25, 2012

I submitted my resume for an IC position and received an email requesting that I submit a proposal of what I expected to make per line for straight transcription and for VR.  With 20 years as an MT, I felt that my proposal was pretty fair.  I said 8.5 cpl for straight transcription and 5 cpl for VR. I received an email from the company telling me that generally thye pay their ICs 7 cpl for straight typing and 3 cpl for VR and asked me to consider lowering my quote.  I was fl ...

Potential To Switch From Straight Transcription To SR?
May 15, 2013

Hi - I have been doing acute care work for this client as an IC for almost two years. While I enjoy the work, I know it is probably in my best interest to start doing some SR work as well. The company I work for just asked their ICs if anyone is interested in learning the SR platform for some new SR work that is coming onboard. I am currently only making .07 cpl! I know that SR line rates are generally lower since the "assumption" is you can go a bit faster, can anyone give me a fair id ...

Straight Transcription, Opinions Wanted
Sep 25, 2013

I would like to know others' opinions on the state of "straight transcription"...is there any kind of future for it, or will the few jobs remaining gradually fade out? What Determines Which Reports Are SR And Which Are Straight Transcription?
Jan 16, 2014

I'm just curious how the clients and/or MTSO's determine this.  You'd think it would be the best dictators use SR, but we have one that is such a horrid dictator it is faster to just transcribe.   There are also some excellent dictators that come through for transcription rather than SR.  Is this a decision the doctors can usually make? ...

Mar 18, 2011

MTSOs - Why Anyone Would Do VR For 0.03 Per Line Or Straight Transcription For 0.07 Per Line
Mar 13, 2012

It's beyond me why anyone would do VR for 0.03 per line or straight transcription for 0.07 per line, even 0.08 stinks.  Are we all that desperate to let these companies get away with not paying a living wage?  It's outrageous.  As long as MTs send their resumes to these companies and apply for these positions, the longer it will take to bring us back to the pay level we deserve.   At this point, i'd rather starve then sell my soul to the devil. ...
